Box Score MANKATO, Minn. --- Minnesota State was unable to salvage a series split with Minnesota Duluth Saturday afternoon as the Bulldogs broke a 1-1 tie with just under three minutes to go in regulation before eventually claiming a 3-1 win in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play at All Seasons Arena.
Â
MSU slips to 3-5-0 overall and 0-4-0 in the WCHA, while UMD improves to 4-3-1 overall and 2-3-1 in league action.
Â
The Mavericks held a one-goal lead after the first period off a superb individual effort by senior
Nicole Germaine (Mississauga, Ont.). Germaine was knocked to the ice in the slot but managed to slip a loose puck past the left pad of UMD sophomore
Kayla Black at 10:54 for her third goal of the year. Juniors
Shelby Moteyunas (Cicero, N.Y.) and
Kathleen Rogan (Vancouver, B.C.) each garnered assists on the play.
Â
Minnesota Duluth deadlocked the contest at one apiece 1:21 into the second stanza. With the power-play winding down, freshman
Sydney Morin had her inital shot saved by senior
Danielle Butters (London, Ont.) but used a back-handed chance to tuck away the rebound.
Â
The match remained scoreless until the 17:04 mark of the third period when Morin played hero for the Bulldogs. She ripped a slap shot from the point that was deflected in front and trickled between Butters' pads to provide UMD with a one-goal cushion it would not relinquish. Senior Jamie Kenyon added an empty-net marker for the Bulldogs at 19:46 to complete the scoring.
Â
MSU was shutout on five power-play opportunities, while UMD finished one-of-six on the advantage and owned a 38-25 edge in shots on goal. Butters registered a match-high 36 saves for the Mavericks, and Black recorded 24 saves for UMD.
