Box Score Wentzville, Mo. --- Minnesota State used five first period goals, including four on the power-play, to take a commanding lead as it ultimately bested Lindenwood 7-1 in non-conference action Friday evening at the Lindenwood Ice Arena.
 
The win elevates the Mavericks to 2-3-0 overall as they remain 0-2-0 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play. Lindenwood drops to 0-4-1 on the year.
 
MSU and senior Lauren Barnes (Burnsville, Minn.) capitalized on their first power-play of the evening - which would become a trend for the Mavericks - when Barnes beat sophomore goaltender Nicole Hensley at the 6:59 mark of the first period. Junior Kathleen Rogan (Vancouver, B.C.) and senior Nicole Germaine (Mississauga, Ont.) both earned assists on the play. The Mavericks made it 4-0 at 14:15 as Rogan, Germaine and senior Melissa Klippenstein (Neubergthal, Man.) scored just 30 seconds apart signaling the end of Hensley's night with Rogan and Germaine's markers both coming on the power-play. Just over a minute after Klippenstein's goal, Barnes produced her second power-play goal of the period besting relief netminder freshman Sarah McGall to give the Mavericks a five-goal lead, but Lady Lion junior Kendra Broad netted a power-play marker for LU at 19:12 to make it 5-1 in favor of MSU at the first intermission.
 
Through 20 minutes of play, MSU was four-of-four on the man advantage and held an 18-9 edge in shots.
 
Senior captain Kari Lundberg (Woodbury, Minn.) continued the scoring barrage at the 5:17 mark of the second stanza when she scored an even-strength goal - unassisted - to snap a 16-game goal scoring drought and extend the Maverick lead to 6-1.
 
The offensive parade kept on rolling in the third period when senior Kelsie Scott (Souris, Man.) sniped McGall at the 6:13 mark for the first Maverick short-handed goal of the season to complete the 7-1 final.
 
After all was said and done, Germaine finished with a career-high four points off a goal and a trio of helpers, also a career-high, while Barnes' pair of goals were also a career-best. Juniors Natalie Stoltz (St. Paul, Minn.) and Shelby Moteyunas (Cicero, N.Y.) also collected assists in the victory.
 
The Mavericks converted four-of-six power play opportunities on the evening and outshot the Lady Lions 37-31. Lindenwood finished one-for-eight on the man advantage. Senior netminder Danielle Butters (London, Ontario) recorded a game-high 30 saves for MSU, while McGall stopped 23 shots in relief for LU.
 
Minnesota State looks to pick up a sweep in tomorrow's series finale. The contest is slated to begin at 12:00 p.m. back at the Lindenwood Ice Arena.
