Last Time on the Ice: Minnesota State suffered its first home series sweep of the season two weeks ago as it fell to top-ranked Minnesota, 8-1 and 6-0, respectively. Senior
Lauren Smith scored the lone Maverick goal on the weekend to pull herself within one of the program’s single-season record.
Giulianna Pallotta picked up an assist on the play and leads all MSU freshman with three points to date.
A Little Bit More On North Dakota: UND owns a 16-10-0 overall record including a 11-9-0 record in WCHA play and 7-5-0 mark away from Grand Forks this season. North Dakota currently sits fifth in the league standings after sweeping host St. Cloud State last weekend by scores of 6-2 and 3-0. The Green and White lead the nation with 15.1 penalty minutes/game and boast the country’s third-best power-play at 34-of-126 (27.0%).
Last Time Around: The two programs split an early-season series Oct. 5-6 in Grand Forks that saw MSU score three goals - including two from Smith - in the final ten minutes to earn a 3-2 come-from-behind victory in the series opener before UND rallied for a 4-1 in the series finale.
Minnesota State All-Time: The MSU women’s hockey program, started in 1998-99, is currently in its 15th season of competition and has compiled a 144-327-44 (.322) record in 515 total games played. The Mavericks are in their 14th year as members of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and boast an 81-249-36 (.270) mark in 366 league contests.
Strong Special Teams: Team-wise, Minnesota State boasts the nation’s 13th-best power-play (19.0%) and 19th-rated penalty-kill (82.8%). The Mavericks are fifth in the country in combined special teams at 56.9%. MSU allowed two power-play goals in 10 chances two weeks ago against Minnesota.
Standing Out: With eight regular-season league games left, Minnesota State holds a firm grip on sixth place in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings. Three of the Mavericks’ remaining four league opponents currently sit above MSU in the conference standings.
