Mavericks Declaw Lady Lions 6-0; Rogan Tallies Hat Trick

1/2/2013 4:44:00 PM

Box Score Wentzville, Mo. --- Kathleen Rogan captured her third career hat trick - all in the second period - as the Minnesota State women’s hockey team completed the sweep over host Lindenwood with a 6-0 victory Wednesday afternoon at the Lindenwood Ice Arena.

Rogan’s last hat trick came on Oct. 1, 2011 when she scored four times in a 10-2 win over Lindenwood at All Seasons Arena and now has more hat tricks than anyone in program history.

Junior Tracy McCann netted the contest’s first marker - her second of the series - at 18:48 of the first period when she backhanded a rebound off a shot from junior Kari Lundberg past LU goaltender Taylor Fairchild to lift the Mavericks to a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.

Minnesota State used four second-period goals to take control of the contest, including three from sophomore Kathleen Rogan.  She beat Fairchild through the five-hole at 1:24 and again at 10:27 before senior Lauren Smith slammed in a rebound - on the power-play - just over a minute later.  Rogan completed the hat trick at the 15:22 mark when she tapped home a loose puck in the crease as freshman Giulianna Pallotta recorded her first career point with a second assist on the play.

Smith connected for her second goal of the match at 10:58 of the third period - once more between the pads - to close out the scoring for MSU.

Rogan’s four points tied a career-high and Smith stretched her point scoring streak to five games with a three-point afternoon. Junior Nicole Germaine and Pallotta each added a career-high two assists for MSU who outshot Lindenwood 38-29. The Mavericks converted on one-of-two power-play opportunities and blanked the Lady Lions on their four power-play chances.

Junior backstop Danielle Butters turned away all 29 shots she faced en route to her fourth shutout and eighth win of the season.

Minnesota State (8-11-3 overall, 4-9-3-1 WCHA) will enjoy an eight-day break before resuming WCHA competition Jan. 11-12 against in-state rival Bemidji State at the Sanford Center in Bemidji, Minn.
