Mavericks Complete Sweep Over Hosting Marauders

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BISMARCK, N.D. – Minnesota State completed the four-game sweep over U-Mary Saturday afternoon as the Mavericks defeated the Marauders 6-2 in game one before earning a 15-3 game-two victory.
 
The 16th ranked Mavericks scored in each of the first two innings of game one as freshman Nolan Johnson recorded an RBI single before freshman Connor McCallum connected on a two-run home run, his first of the season, as MSU took a 3-0 lead.
 
Minnesota State extended its lead to 6-0 in the top of the fifth inning as they scored three unearned runs highlighted by an RBI single by senior Jeremy Sudbeck.
 
U-Mary scored its first run game one in the bottom of the fifth after Tyler Steffan crossed home plate after a two-out Minnesota State error which made the score 6-1.
 
The Marauders would add their second run in the following inning but it wouldn’t be enough as the Mavericks were able to hold onto the 6-2 lead for the final inning.
 
McCallum led the Mavericks offensively in game one going 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored while Sudbeck finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
 
Senior right-handed pitcher Nick Sutherland picked up his first win of the season after allowing one unearned run on three hits in five innings pitched in his first start of the year.
 
Sophomore Lucas Skjefte led game two off with a triple before being driven in by Sudbeck’s RBI single giving MSU the first run of the contest.  Sudbeck would eventually score the second run of the first inning on an RBI single by senior Ben Kincaid giving the Mavericks a 2-0 lead.
 
After scoring its third run courtesy of a sacrifice fly in the second inning, Minnesota State extended its lead to 6-0 the following inning thanks to an RBI single by senior Matt Odegaard before a two RBI double by McCallum.
 
U-Mary found the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning as Duane Kiyota Jr. struck a single to left field cutting the lead to 6-1.
 
Minnesota State would take complete control of game two in the fifth inning after scoring six runs to take a commanding 12-1 lead.  The Mavericks six-run inning was highlighted by RBI singles from senior Matt Kuchenbecker and Sudbeck before an RBI double by Johnson and a two RBI single by Kincaid.
 
The Mavericks added three more runs the following inning before allowing U-Mary two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to make the score 15-4 where it would remain as the 10-run-rule came into effect.
 
Three Mavericks finished game two 3-for-4 at the plate including Sudbeck, Johnson and Kincaid while Both junior Mike Eckhart and McCallum went 2-for-3 with two runs scored while McCallum added four RBI.
 
Sophomore Jason Hoppe earned his second win of the season in his first start after allowing three earned runs on eight hits while striking out 10 batters in six innings of work.
 
After the sweep, Minnesota State improves to 21-5 overall and 9-1 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference while U-Mary falls to 3-25 overall and 2-12 in conference action.
 
Minnesota State returns to action Wednesday, April 11 when the Mavericks host Bemidji State.  First pitch of the weekday doubleheader against the Beavers is slated for 1:30 p.m.
