th ranked Mavericks took the first two in the four-game series against U-Mary Friday afternoon as MSU won the first game, 6-1 before earning an 11-1 victory in game two.
Minnesota State jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning as senior #
Pat Dockendorf# hit a sacrifice fly which brought in junior #
Lucas Skjefte# before the Mavericks would pick up two more runs the following inning to take a 3-0 lead.
MSU would score for the third consecutive inning as senior #
Matt Odegaard# connected on an RBI double to left center which scored senior #
Jeremy Sudbeck# who reached on an error earlier in the inning to give the Mavericks a 4-0 edge.
U-Mary was shutout until the fourth inning when starting pitcher senior #
Ben Kincaid# gave up his only run of the afternoon on a home run by James Carroll.
The Mavericks added their final two runs of the first game in the fifth inning courtesy of an RBI single by junior #
Jon Flattery# and an RBI double by junior #
Mike Eckhart#.
Kincaid earned his fourth win of the year in his second complete game after allowing just one run on eight hits while striking out 11 batters.
MSU was led at the plate by senior #
Matt Kuchenbecker# who went 2-for-4 and Eckhart who finished 2-for-3.
The Mavericks were held hitless through the first two innings of the second game until the bats came alive in the third inning.
Minnesota State scored five runs on five hits in the top of the third highlighted by back-to-back home runs by Kuchenbecker and Dockendorf.
The following inning MSU did its damage with two outs as Kuchenbecker and Dockendorf struck again, this time with back-to-back RBI doubles as the Mavericks extended their lead to 7-0.
After adding a single run in the sixth inning, Minnesota State would score two more runs in the top of the seventh to take a 10-run lead before the Marauders would score their first run of the game to cut the lead to 10-1 through seven.
A single run in the eighth inning would put the Mavericks up 11-1 and enforce the 10-run-rule as MSU earned the game-two victory.
Earning his sixth win of the season was sophomore #
Bryce Bellin# who allowed no runs on four hits while striking out two batters in six innings pitched.
Five Mavericks recorded multiple hits in the second game as Dockendorf led the way going 4-for-5 with three RBI as his home run was his fourth of the season. Other Mavericks who recorded multiple hits included Skjefte (2-for-2), Kuchenbecker (2-for-4), Kincaid (2-for-4) and Odegaard (2-for-4).
The two wins improves the Mavericks record to 19-5 overall and 7-1 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference while the Marauders drop to 3-23 overall and 2-10 in the NSIC.
The two teams will finish the four-game series tomorrow with another doubleheader with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m., after the start time was moved up one hour due to a threat of rain in the area.
