Box Score Mankato, Minn.— Minnesota State’s 1-0 lead after the first period wasn’t enough as it fell 5-2 to the first-ranked University of Wisconsin in a Friday matinee at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis.
 
Minnesota State came out fast against the Badgers when 
Lauren Smith put on the jets on a race for a  loose puck in the neutral zone beating the Wisconsin defender to force a breakaway goal. The goal marks the 11
th time MSU scored first in a game this season.
 
Despite being outshot 17-7 in the period, Minnesota State held the 1-0 lead as its senior goaltender 
Alli Altmann turned down all 17 shots UW threw her way.
 
Wisconsin’s Ammerman sister’s each tallied a goal in a minute and 44 seconds apart to give the Badgers the 2-1 lead. The Badgers used Brooke Ammerman’s shorthanded goal at 9:03 of the second period to knot the game at 1-1. The goal marks the eighth shorty MSU has given up this season.
 
At 10:46, Badger forward Brittany Ammerman beat 
Alli Altmann low stick-side to put to the Badgers up 2-1 on MSU. Brittany Ammerman wasn’t done scoring in the second period as she one-timed a pass on the back post when Brianna Decker slid the puck across the slot.
 
UW’s Madison Packer beat Altmann after she came out the corner and went five-hole on Altmann at the 13:15 mark. The Badger power-play went 1-for-6 in the game as MSU was shut out on its two chances. Wisconsin’s Hillary Knight added a goal at the 16:44 mark on a blast from the top of the circle to drive the Badgers up 5-1.
 
MSU sophomore forward 
Nicole Germaine scored her fifth goal of the season with eight seconds remaining in the game as the puck bounced out to her in the slot before she buried is stick-side past UW’s Alex Rigsby.
 
Minnesota State was outshot 47-of-26 in the contest.
 
 Minnesota State (7-20-0, 3-20-0 WCHA) and first-ranked Wisconsin (25-2—2, 18-2-2-1 WCHA) meet again at the Kohl Center Sunday at 2:07 p.m.
