Verona, Wis.— Minnesota State lost the opening game of the best-of-three series against No.1 Wisconsin, 7-0, in the first round of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs. Brooke Ammerman scored four goals for Wisconsin in the MSU loss.
Not the start it was looking for, Minnesota State found itself down 3-0 in the opening six minutes of the game. Brooke and Brittany Ammerman each scored goals a minute and 32 seconds apart that was created from two-on-one opportunities.
Brianna Decker scored third goal of the period for UW at she walked out of the corner and put it past Danielle Butters at 5:59 of the first. After the three goals, the Mavericks put in senior goaltender Alli Altmann.
The Mavericks rose to the occasion and elevated the pace of their game late in the period but was outshot 13-4 in the first period.
Wisconsin expanded its lead to four after Carolyn Prevost hit the post and Decker put the rebound away for her second goal of the game at the 11:03 mark. Brooke Ammerman also tallied her second goal when she put away a rebound at 15:30, forcing a 5-0 lead.
Ammerman scored two more goals in the third period, totaling for four goals in the game. Her third goal was a short-handed goal when MSU coughed it up at the point and gave her a breakaway. Brooke Ammerman’s fourth goal was on a wrap around past Altmann, forcing the 7-0 final score.
Wisconsin outshot MSU 39-20 in the game. MSU shut down the UW power-play in its five chances. MSU went 0-for-1 on the advantage in the game.
Minnesota State and Wisconsin meet Saturday for game two of the series at 7:07 p.m., in Vernona, Wis., at The Eagles Nest. MSU must win tomorrow to force a game three on Sunday or its season will come to an end.
