Duluth, Minn.— Minnesota State finished its regular season Western Collegiate Hockey Association schedule against Minnesota Duluth as it fell 7-1 at AMSOIL Arena.
Just as last night started, Minnesota Duluth jumped on the board within the first minute of the game on a goal from Jamie Kenyon. The goal came from a fast bounce off the boards behind the MSU net when Bridgette Lacquette's shot rifled off the boards and fell onto the stick of Kenyon at the 59 second mark.
Kenyon knocked a rebound away for her second goal of the game a minute and 43 seconds after her first to force an early 2-0 Bulldog lead.
UMD’s Haley Irwin scored, bringing the score to 3-0 at the 13:33 mark of the first period. The goal marked Irwin’s 200th career point at Minnesota Duluth.
In the second period, the Bulldogs didn’t earn a shot on goal until 7:15 into the period as the Mavericks outshot them 12-7 in the period and 20-14 through two periods. Despite leading the shots on goal category, UMD managed to improve its lead to 4-0 when Jessica Wong came down the sideboards and cut to the net, water-bottling MSU’s Altmann. UMD’s Vanessa Thibault notched a goal at the 4:09 mark of the third period.
Minnesota Duluth’s Gina Dodge and Brienna Gillanders added two more goals to bring the score to a 7-1 final.
MSU outshot UMD 30-26 in the game.
With the loss, Minnesota State moves to 7-26-1 on the season and 3-23-1 in the WCHA. The Mavericks open postseason play at No.1 Wisconsin next Friday in a best-of-three series.
