Leinonen, Zrust and Smith scored for MSU in Saturday's game

MSU Ties UND in Final Home Game for 2011-12

Box Score Mankato, Minn— Minnesota State (7-24-1, 3-22-1-0 WCHA) tied North Dakota (19-9-3, 15-8-3-2 WCHA) 3-3 but lost in a shootout thriller on senior night at All Seasons Arena in Mankato Saturday afternoon.
 
Before puck drop, the woman’s hockey team celebrated their six seniors which consisted of goalie Alli Altmann, winger Emmi Leinonen, forward/defenseman Jenna Peterson, winger Moira O’Connor, defenseman Jackie Otto and defenseman Ariel Mackley.

The Mavericks struck first at 10:44 into the first period when the senior out of Finland, Emmi Leinonen, scored her fifth goal of the year by batting a puck out of mid-air past Stephanie Ney.  The goal was assisted by fellow senior Jackie Otto and Lauren Barnes.

tate took a 2-0 lead when the puck was shuffled in and around the crease and then finally put in past the diving NorthDakota goalie Ney by junior Lauren Zrust.  The goal was Zrust’s fifth goal of the season.  She was assisted by Kari Lundberg and Tracy McCann. 
 
North Dakota made the score 2-1 at15:08 into the first when Monique Lamoureux-Kolls scored a power play goal. Lamoureux-Kolls was assisted her sister Jocelyne Lamoureux and Michelle Karvinen.
 
North Dakota scored again on the power play at 18:04 into the second period.  It was netted by Jocelyne Lamoureux and assisted by sister Monique Lamoureux-Kolls and Michelle Karvivnen.
 
55 seconds later the Mavericks struck back making the score, 3-2, heading into the third period.  Lauren Smith one-timed her ninth goal of the season on the power-play as she sat on the back door to tap it in. Junior Emilia Andersson and senior Jackie Otto marked the assists. The Smith goal marked her second of the weekend.
 
UND tied it up at three just over five minutes into the final period when Candance Molle took a slap shot from the point  and was redirected into the net off the stick of Jocelyne Lamoureux and assisted also by Michelle Karvinen
 
Although UND outshot MSU 16-2 in the third period, neither team break the 3-3 tie. The Mavericks were outshot in the contest 40-26 in total. 
 
In a scoreless overtime, each team registered two shots on goal. In the shootout North Dakota converted on all four shots as MSU was stuffed on its fourth chance to fall 4-3 in the shootout.

Minnesota State was 1-of-2 on the power play and North Dakota was 2-of-7 in the game.
 
Minnesota State returns to the ice for its final series of the year on the road against University of Minnesota-Duluth.  Puck drop is scheduled for 7:07 p.m., in Duluth Friday night.
