Box Score St. Cloud, Minn. --- Sophomore
Shelby Moteyunas scored for the second straight game but four St. Cloud State goals in the final two periods would doom the Mavericks who fell, 5-2, in their final WCHA game of 2012 Saturday afternoon at the National Hockey Center.
The Huskies struck first on a goal by
Haylea Schmid who beat junior netminder
Danielle Butters between the pads at 4:47 to give SCSU its second opening period lead in as many days.
Five second period penalties would cost the Mavericks as
Alex Nelson scored on a one-timer from the dot at the three-minute mark for SCSU’s second five-on-three goal of the series. The Husky power-play unit connected once more at 17:45 when
Molli Mott shelved a loose puck after a scramble in front of Butters extending the lead to 3-0.
Minnesota State responded five minutes into the third period on the power-play when Moteyunas beat goaltender
Katie Fitzgerald on the blocker side for her second goal of the weekend. Just twelve seconds later, junior
Tracy McCann found twine off a crossing pass from senior
Lauren Smith for her ninth goal of the year to bring the Mavericks within one.
However, Schmid would provide an answer for the Huskies 57 seconds later skating nearly coast-to-coast for her second goal and fourth point of the contest respectively.
Katie Allen added an empty net goal at 18:32 to close out the scoring.
Butters made 29 saves to pace the Mavericks who were outshot 34-29 and finished one-for-three on the power-play. St. Cloud State converted two-of-six power-play opportunities in the win.
Minnesota State (6-11-3 overall, 4-9-3-1 WCHA) will not return to action until Jan. 1 when it travels to Wentzville, Mo. to challenge Lindenwood University in a non-conference series.
