Box Score Mankato, Minn. ---  Junior Tracy McCann tallied three points and sophomore Kathleen Rogan tied the game 3-3 with 11 seconds remaining in regulation as Minnesota State overcame a three-goal deficit to record a shootout victory over Minnesota-Duluth Friday night at All Seasons Arena.

The Minnesota State women’s hockey team had faced-off against Minnesota-Duluth 55 times prior to Friday night’s WCHA matchup and had come away with only four victories.

It looked it would be more of the same as the Bulldogs led the Mavericks 3-0 midway through the final period, but MSU put together a rousing comeback led by Tracy McCann for a stirring 4-3 shootout win over UMD.

The first two periods were controlled by the Bulldogs, specifically Zoe Hickel. With 2:53 remaining in the first, she laced a shot that went over the right shoulder of MSU goaltender Danielle Butters and hit the net just under the crossbar. The referee originally called it no goal. However, the shot was reviewed at the next stoppage of play and Hickel was awarded the goal.

MSU’s first power play of the game came late in the second period when Hickel scored again with a shorthanded goal with 42 seconds left in the stanza for a 2-0 UMD lead going into the second intermission.

The Bulldogs scored again 6:20 into the third with a goal from Pernilla Winberg for a 3-0 lead. That’s when McCann and the Mavericks began their comeback attempt.

Sophomore Casey Hirsch started the rally by getting one by UMD netminder Kayla Black with 8:14 remaining. The goal was assisted by McCann and senior Emilia Andersson.

MSU pulled Butters with two minutes left to get the extra-man advantage in front of Black. McCann scored with 1:31 to go with the assists from Andersson and junior Lauren Barnes.

Kathleen Rogan completed the epic comeback tying the game with 11 seconds left on the clock when she put a loose puck in the back of the net after Butters was again pulled.

After a scoreless five-minute overtime, the two teams engaged in a shootout. Sophomore Erin Krichiver replaced Butters for the shootout for her first collegiate experience and the move paid dividends. She stopped Hickel on UMD’s first shot. Rogan scored on MSU’s first shot.

UMD’s Jenna McParland got one by Krichiver to even the shootout. McCann connected on her shootout try in what proved to be the game winner.

With Jessica Wong barreling down for the equalizing attempt, Krichiver held her ground and stopped the shot giving the Mavericks the shootout win.

The Bulldogs outshot MSU 39-26 overall with Butters making 36 saves.

McCann scored three points on a goal and two assists, including the game winner in the shootout. Andersson contributed with two assists.

This moves MSU to 3-2-2 overall and 1-2-1-1 in the WCHA. The two teams battle again tomorrow at 3:07 p.m. at All-Seasons Arena.
