Butters, Mavericks Blank Lindenwood 3-0

10/12/2012 10:04:00 PM

Box Score Mankato, Minn. ---  Senior Lauren Smith scored her second straight game-winning goal and junior Danielle Butters made 20 saves to earn her first career shutout to lift Minnesota State to a 3-0 victory over Lindenwood Friday evening at All Seasons Arena.

The Maverick penalty kill led the charge for MSU as Lindenwood only fired six shots and failed to score on eight power-play opportunities

Minnesota State drew first blood when Smith scored on a breakaway beating Nicole Hensley through the five-hole at 17:45 in the first period off a pretty two-line pass from senior Erica Magnusson.

In a scoreless 2nd period, Lindenwood had five power-play chances, but Butters carried the stingy MSU defense who would not allow a goal. Hensley collected 14 saves in the frame, and Butters blocked all four Lions’ shots.

Senior defense Emilia Andersson extended the lead at 14:05 in the 3rd period by blasting a slap shot off the crossbar on the power-play with junior Lauren Barnes and sophomore Kathleen Rogan - in her first game back from injury - credited with the assists.

Junior forward Kelsie Scott capped off the win with 12 seconds left in regulation slamming home her own rebound to net her first career goal thanks to assists from senior Lauren Zrust and sophomore Natalie Stotlz.

The Mavericks outshot LU 43-20 while going 1-2 on the man advantage.

Minnesota State (2-2-1, 1-2-1-0 WCHA) goes for its first sweep of the season tomorrow afternoon against Lindenwood at All Seasons Arena with drop of the puck set for 3:07 p.m.
