Mavericks Split with Beavers

Box Score Bemidji, Minn.— Just like the series in early November, Minnesota State (7-15-0 overall, 3-13-0 WCHA) and Bemidji State (13-8-2 overall, 7-8-1 WCHA) skated to a weekend split as the Mavericks dropped a 4-0 decision Saturday night to the Beavers at the Sanford Center in Bemidji.
 
The first period totaled 28 shots as MSU outshot BSU 15-13 in the period. Bemidji State had a 5-on-3 opportunity late in the first period but the Mavericks successfully kept the Beavers off the board.
 
For the second night in a row, Bemidji State jumped on the board first on a Danielle Williams one-timer from Rachael Kelly and Abby Williams at the 6:53 mark of the second period.
 
The Beavers rolled to a two-goal lead when Marlee Wheelhouse used a screen to put a puck high gloveside from the top of the circle off the draw in the Maverick zone. BSU used an 18-5 shot advantage in the second period to keep control of the momentum.
 
At 17:56 of the second period, Minnesota State’s Tracy McCann was sent to the locker room with a game misconduct as she received a checking from behind penalty and a five minute major penalty.
 
Able to kill the first 2:36 of the major penalty, MSU let up a third goal to the Beavers, marking the first power-play goal for the Beavers of the weekend 32 seconds into the third period.
 
Bemidji State put the game out of reach on a blast from the point by Danielle Williams for her second goal of the game at 11:02 of the third, moving to a 4-0 win over the Mavericks.
 
For the fourth time this season, Maverick goalie Alli Altmann faced at least 40 shots, ending the game with 42 saves on the 46 Beaver shots. The Minnesota State ended the game with 30 shots. MSU went 0-for-2 on the power-play, while the Beavers ended 1-for-5 on the advantage.
 
Minnesota State returns home next weekend to face St. Cloud State as game one of the two-game series is slated for 7:07 p.m. on Friday January 13 at All Seasons Arena.
