#10 Minnesota State Defeats Northwood in Spring Trip Finale

Winter Haven, Fla. — The Minnesota State baseball team wrapped up its annual spring trip with a, 9-1, victory over Northwood (Mich.) Friday. After starting the season 2-4, the Mavericks finished the spring trip on a three-game winning streak.

 

The Mavericks started fast, scoring four runs in the opening inning. Junior outfielder Ben Kincaid reached on a fielder’s choice which scored a run, followed by junior infielder Pat Dockendorf ripping a two-run triple and junior infielder Matt Kuchenbecker hitting an RBI-single.

 

 MSU added one in the third when freshman outfielder Scott Linder scored on an error and another in the fifth on Kuchenbecker’s second RBI-single.

 

In the sixth, up 6-0, Dockendorf added two more runs for the Mavericks, hitting his second two-run triple of the game.

 

Northwoods scored its lone run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly, followed by the Mavericks adding their ninth run ninth inning on an RBI-single from senior outfielder Aaron Berner.

 

Dockendorf led the team at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two triples and four runs batted in, along with Kuchenbecker who finished 2-for-2 with two RBI.

 

Senior left-handed pitcher Danny Miller threw pitched up the win for MSU, pitching seven innings, scattering three hits, fanning 11 and walking two. Senior righty Luke Putz pitched the eighth inning, striking out two, and sophomore righty Mahlon Zimmerman pitched a scoreless ninth.

 

MSU tagged 16 hits to Northwoods four. The Mavericks had 11 players earn at least one hit in the win.

 

The Mavericks (5-4 overall) will return to Minnesota and play fellow NSIC member Bemidji State in a nonconference double header March 22,  in Minnetonka, Minn. at 11:00 a.m.
