Grand Forks, N.D.— The Minnesota State women’s hockey team (5-9-0, 1-7-0 WCHA) was swept by the University of North Dakota (8-4-1, 5-3-1-0 WCHA) as it suffered a 6-1 loss Saturday evening in Grand Forks, N.D. The Mavericks were outshot 24-19 in the contest.
MSU was 1-5 on the power-play, totaling for five shots on UND goaltender Stephanie Ney while on the advantage.
UND’s Jocelyn Lamoureux broke UND into the scoring column at 17:18 of the first period when she tapped a puck across the goal line as she sat on the back post. Line mates Monique Lamourex-Kolls and Michelle Karvinen were credited with the assists.
University of North Dakota scored two goals in 1:32 midway in the second period. Alyssa Wiebe picked off a pass in the UND zone to force a breakaway, eventually beating MSU sophomore goaltender Danielle Butters top shelf.
UND’s Karvinen put a puck away after Jocelyn Lamoureux hit the post to put North Dakota up 3-0 at 10:45 into the second period.
UND extended its lead to 4-0 when Josefina Jakobsen scored early in the third period at 4:35.
MSU’s Kari Lundberg scored the Mavericks lone goal of the game at 13:10 of the third period on the power-play. Senior defenseman Ariel Mackley and sophomore forward Lauren Barnes tallied the assists.
North Dakota’s Jakobsen and Wiebe both struck again in the final five minutes of the game to beat the Mavericks 6-1.
Minnesota State returns to action Dec. 2 when it will host Wisconsin for a Western Collegiate Hockey Association series at 7:07 p.m.
