Auburndale, Fla. -- Minnesota State handed Slippery Rock University an 8-6 loss Sunday at Lake Myrtle Park in its first game of its annual spring break trip to Florida.
The Mavericks (7-3), who were ranked 22nd in last week’s National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Division II national poll, jumped out to a 7-0- lead before SRU (4-5) scored six unanswered runs to make it a game.

Blake Schwartz, who upped his record to 3-0 for 2010 with the decision, went the first 7.2 innings and gave up six runs while fanning four with no walks. Senior

Luke Putz, who closed out the game with two innings of relief for his fourth save of the year.

Zach Rowles was one-for-three with three runs driven in. The Mavericks left 12 runners in scoring position in the game.
MSU continues nonconference action in Florida Monday with a doubleheader against Winona State.
