Mavericks Take on Mustangs in Home-and-Home Series

MANKATO, Minn.­ — The Minnesota State baseball team (18-6 overall, 7-1 NSIC), which owns a three-game winning streak and has won nine of its last ten games, play the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State in a home-and-home series Thurday and Friday, April 1 and 2. The two teams will play a doubleheader Thursday, in Mankato, Minn., starting at 1:30 p.m., and Friday, in Marshall, Minn., starting at 1:30 p.m.

Last Action: The Mavericks traveled to Fayette, Iowa for a four-game tilt with the Upper Iowa Peacocks and left with three wins and one loss. The Mavericks dropped the opening contest between the two teams on Saturday, 4-2, but rallied to beat the Peacocks in the last three games, 6-4, 8-4 and 11-2.

About Southwest Minnesota State: The Mustangs are currently 8-6 overall and 4-0 in the NSIC. This past weekend, they swept Northern State on the road by scores of 14-4, 15-0, 13-2 and 12-0. SMSU is led by senior third baseman Matt Bauer who has started all 14 games for the Mustangs and owns a .447 batting average, .518 OBP and .660 slugging percentage. Bauer owns four doubles, two home runs and a team-best 20 RBI on the year. Southwest Minnesota State is coached by Paul Blanchard.

MSU Team and Player Notes:
- The Mavericks have scored the majority of their runs (33) in the fifth inning this season and have giving up the most runs in the second and third (15 each).
- Junior outfielder Danny Miller, the owner of a an eight-game hitting streak, batted .462 for the weekend with two triples and six RBI, moving his season batting-average to .341 and RBI on the year to 20. The two triples bumped his career total to 11, which is tied for first on MSU's career list. Miller also owns five triples on the year, which is tied for second most in a season.
- Senior third baseman Kosuke Hattori, who is currently hitting .311 with four doubles, two triples, one home run and 18 RBI on the year, sits fifth with 185 career hits and his 553 at bats moves him to second on MSU's career list. Hattori also sits third in runs scored (138), sixth in triples (8), second in walks (88), is second in career steals (76) and is tied for fourth in career games (181).
- Senior righthanded pitcher Patrick Lenton, a preseason All-America pick, continues to lead the Mavericks with a 5-2 record, a team-low 2.30 earned run average and 46 strikeouts in a team-high 43 innings pitched. Lenton's 19 career wins ranks seventh all-time at MSU and his 188 career strikeouts is tied for eighth.

On Deck: The Mavericks will travel to Duluth, Minn. next Tuesday, April 6, for a doubleheader with the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs. Game one is slated for 1:00 p.m. MSU then travels to Bismarck, N.D., April 10 and 11 for a four-game tilt with the University of Mary Marauders. Saturday's contest is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m and Sunday's at 12:00 p.m.
