Minnesota State Splits with Peacocks on the Road Saturday

FAYETTE, Iowa--- The Minnesota State baseball squad traveled out of state to Fayette, Iowa to take on the Upper Iowa Peacocks in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Saturday afternoon. The Mavericks were beat 4-2 in game one but rebounded to defeat the Peacocks in game two, 6-4.

Minnesota State’s first-baseman Ben Kincaid opened up scoring with an RBI single, sending short stop Zach Rowles in for the opening run. Outfielder Danny Miller then tripled to right-center scoring Kincaid to put the Mavericks up 2-0 after the top of the third inning.

Upper Iowa answered to tie the game in the bottom of the third inning when Nick Bergeman scored on a Maverick throwing error and Tom Longoni singled to score Jordan Nuss.

Luis Rodriguez hit an RBI single to center, scoring Seth Fox in the fifth, while Mikey Henrichs batted in Lucas Wilsing with a single through the left side.

In his second loss of the season, right-hand pitcher Pat Lenton gave up three runs, all earned, on ten hits, while walking one and striking out two.

In game two, Upper Iowa scored two runs in the second and fifth innings giving them the early 4-0 lead on the Mavericks.

The Mavericks rallied in the sixth inning, scoring five runs to take the 5-4 lead after six.

The five-run sixth inning started when right-fielder Aaron Berner earned an RBI on a fielder’s choice, scoring Miller. Berner later scored the second run of the inning on a wild pitch. Second baseman Matt Kuchenbecker gave the Mavericks the 5-4 lead with a three-run bomb down the right-field line.

Minnesota State added an insurance run in the seventh inning courtesy of Miller who hit a sacrifice fly to score third baseman Kosuke Hattori, giving the Mavericks the 6-4 advantage.

Right-hand pitcher Blake Schwartz bettered his record to 5-0 with the win, giving up four earned-runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out three.

The Mavericks (16-6, 5-1 NSIC) and Peacocks (4-9, 1-1 NSIC) will take the field tomorrow for another doubleheader in Fayette, Iowa with the first contest slated for a 12:00 p.m. start.
