Minnesota State Opens NSIC Play 4-0 After Northern State Sweep

MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State baseball team bettered its record to 15-5, 4-0 in the NSIC with a double-header sweep over Nothern State. The Mavericks downed the Wolves in game one, 12-9, and completed the sweep with a 10-4 victory.

Bret Mitchell got the start in game one, striking out six, while giving up six hits, four runs and three walks. Mitchell betters his record to 4-2 with the win.

The Mavericks opened up scoring in the first inning when Ben Kincaid scored on a throwing error and Danny Miller scored off of a Steven Helget double, putting the Mavericks up 2-0.

The Wolves scored a run of their own in the first when Lucas Jung doubled, scoring Aaron Brion.

The Mavericks opened up the contest in the fourth inning by scoring 6 runs. Mike Eckhart scored two base runners with a double, Zach Rowles hit a two-RBI single and Helget doubled to score a runner.

Nothern State continued to score runs, putting up 5 in the fourth and sixth innings, but the Mavericks tallied three more to close out the contest to defeat the NSU.

Miller led the Mavericks with three hits in four trips to the plate.

In game two, Ben Kincaid earned his first victory in five innings of action, striking out two, while giving up four hits, four runs and four walks.

The Mavericks took an early 6-3 lead after three innings of play off of RBI singles from Miller,  Aaron Berner, Kincaid and Matt Odegaard.

Meanwhile, Northern State scored its three runs in the second on a single from Payton McCleary and a double from James Paul.

Minnesota State added four more in the remainder of the contest to finish off the Wolves, 10-4.

Kincaid led the Maverick bats by going three-for-five, while Miller was two-for-three.

The Mavericks (15-5, 4-0 NSIC), who have won six games straight, continue conference play this weekend at Upper Iowa with four games on the docket. Saturday's outing will have a 1:30 p.m. start time.
