Mavericks to Face Huskies in Home-and-Home Series This Weekend

Mankato, Minn.--- The Mavericks, now 4-17-5 on the year and 2-15-5-3 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play, will travel to St. Cloud on Friday, February 5 for a 2:07 p.m. contest with the Huskies and host SCSU Sunday, February 7 at 12:07 p.m. Friday’s contest will be held at the National Hockey Center and Sunday’s at All Seasons Arena.

Program History: The 2009-10 season marks the 12th year of women’s hockey as a varsity sport at Minnesota State. The Mavericks currently hold a 117-247-37 (.338) all-time record.

About St. Cloud:
The St. Cloud State University Huskies sit fifth in the WCHA with their 11-11-6 overall record and 8-10-4-3 in the WCHA. The Huskies are lead by senior forward Caitlin Hogan (15-22--37), senior forward Holly Roberts (12-21--33), senior forward Felicia Nelson (23-7--30) and senior forward Meaghan Pezon (10-19--29). Hogan’s 37 points ranks seond in the WCHA in overall point scoring. Nelson’s 23 goals ranks first in the conference against all-opponents. Hogan’s 22 assists ranks second in the WCHA against all opponents. All four of the points leaders for the Huskies sit at the top of the conference in power play points with Nelson and Pezon owning 17 each and Roberts and Hogan owning 16 each.

MSU/SCSU History: Minnesota State is 21-21-5 all-time against the Huskies. Earlier this season the Mavericks played host to St. Cloud State to start a home-and-home series in which the Mavericks were victorious in a shootout after tying 4-4 at the end of regulation. MSU then traveled to St. Cloud to wrap up the home-and-home with the Huskies and lost, 1-0. In the shootout win, The Mavericks four goals came by way of sophomore blueliner Jackie Otto, sophomore forward Emmi Leinonen, senior blueliner Holly Snyder and senior forward Ashley Young sending the Mavericks to over-time. Neither team could capitalize during the extra period, but in the shootout senior captain Kala Buganski scored the only goal of the shootout giving the Mavericks the extra WCHA point.

Minnesota Notes: The Minnesota State Mavericks traveled to Minneapolis over the weekend to take on the Golden Gophers of Minnesota and suffered a sweep which making them  4-17-5 overall, 2-15-5 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association...The Mavericks dropped 12 of their last 13 contests, seven straight...eight of the thirteen losses came against top-ten teams...The team has been out scored 25-7 in their seven game skid...The Mavericks had two members of the team earn two points on the weekend, senior forward Kala Buganski (2 assists) and freshman forward Lauren Smith (2 goals)...Senior forward Ashley Young continues to lead the Mavericks in points with 17 (7-10--17) after earning a goal in Friday night’s contest...Smith, who earned two goals over the weekend sits second in points on the team with 15 (6-9--15)...The Mavericks finished 0-16 on the weekend with an extra skater, 12-131 on the season...Minnesota State is 31-151 on the penalty kill...The Mavericks own 44 total goals on the season and have given up 87 scores on the year.

At Minnesota 1-29-10 Notes: In Friday night’s loss, the Mavericks tallied two goals to the Gophers one giving them the early advantage. Each squad killed off two penalties during the first period. At the 11:12 mark, MSU senior forward Ashley Young tallied her seventh goal of the season off of a rebound on Gopher goaltender’s stick-side...Young was assisted by sophomore forward Emmi Leinonen...The Mavericks lead didn’t last long...Only 13 seconds later the Gopher tallied the equalizer scored by senior forward Chelsey Jones and assisted by junior Laura May and rookie Becky Kortum...Late in the first period, Minnesota State continued to attack the net and it paid off when rookie forward Lauren Smith earned her fifth goal of the season off of her own rebound...Smith was assisted by senior captain Kala Buganski and junior blueliner Amy Udvig...Early in the second a couple of Maverick penalties lead to a five on three opportunity for the Gophers...Minnesota capitalized on the two skater advantage when junior and Gopher points leader Emily West tallied goal number 16 of the season on assists from senior Brittany Francis and sophomore defenseman Anne Schleper...The Gophers increased their lead to 4-2 after finishing the second period with a couple even strength goals scored by freshman Gophers Sam Downey and Becky Kortum and that’s how the game would finish...The two teams finished equal in the shots on goal department, each earning 24...Sophomore goaltender Alli Altmann finished the contest with 20 saves, eight of them coming on power play chances.

At Minnesota 1-30-10 Notes: In Saturday’s contest, the Gophers took the early 1-0 lead at the 13:39 mark in the first period...Senior forward Brittany Francis tallied goal number eight of the season on a scramble in front of the net...Francis was assisted by rookie defender Megan Bozek...At the 7:37 mark in the second period, rookie forward Lauren Smith evened up the contest for the Mavericks on a scrappy rebound on Gopher goaltender Alyssa Gorgan’s glove side...Rookie defender Erika Magnusson and senior forward Kala Buganski earned assists on the equalizer...It didn’t take long in the second period for the Gophers to reclaim their lead...Junior forward Emily West tallied goal number 17 of the season on a power play opportunity on assists from Francis and Sarah Erickson...The Gophers added two more goals in the third period scored by junior Terra Rasmussen and sophomore Ann Schleper...The Gophers out shot the Mavericks 31-24. Minnesota finished the contest 2-6 on power play chances, while Minnesota State finished 0-6...Sophomore goaltender Alli Altmann finished the game with 27 saves.
