Mavericks Earn Third Straight Victory with 5-3 Win over Ohio State

Columbus, Ohio. --- The Minnesota State women’s hockey team picked up a 5-3 come-from-behind win over Ohio State University Friday evening.

With the win, the Mavericks have a three-game winning streak; the first time since the beginning of last season when they started the year 3-0-0.

The Mavericks opened the scoring for the Mavericks when rookie Melissa Kilppenstein tallied her first career goal 12:32 into the first, assisted by freshman forward Tracy McCann and sophomore forward Lauren Zrust.

Ohio State took over the lead late in the first with goals at the 12:59 mark and the 18:30 mark. The first scored by Ally Tarr and the second by Hokey Langan, both even strength.

The Maverick knotted things up at the 9:33 mark of the second. Senior forward Nina Tikkinen tallied her second goal of the season, sophomore Lauren Smith and rookie Kathleen Rogan earned helpers on the score.

Late in the second, Langan put Ohio State up 3-2 with a power play tally at the 13:29 mark.

Tikkinen again knotted things up 8:36 into the third with her second tally of the contest, third of the season. The goal was unassisted.

The Mavericks then took their second lead of the game, scored by Zrust at the 9:27 mark, just :51 after they tied things up. The goal was assisted by freshman Nicole Germaine on the goal.

MSU sealed things up late in the third with a even strength goal scored by Rogan and assisted by junior Moira O’Connor and Tikkinen.

The Mavericks outshot OSU in the game, 40-27. MSU finished 0-of-42on power play chances, while OSU went 1-for-4 in the game.

MSU goaltender Alli Altmann finished with 24 saves, while OSU’s Lisa Steffes recorded 35 saves.

MSU (5-5-1, 4-5-0-0 WCHA) and Ohio State (6-4-1, 2-4-1-1 WCHA) will finish up their series tomorrow night at 7:07 p.m. in Columbus, Ohio.
