Minnesota State Women's Hockey Squad Earns Tie Against Beavers

                Mankato, Minn.--- Minnesota State University opened its home WCHA play Friday night as the Mavericks tied the Beavers, 2-2, at the All Seasons Arena in front of 513 fans.  Bemidji State earned the extra WCHA point after 13 rounds of a shootout period.

MSU freshman Lauren Zrust scored her first career goal as a Maverick early in the first period when she capped of a well executed three on two rush at the 8:52 mark.  Sophomore forward Jenna Peterson and senior forward Ashley Young both had assists on the play as Zrust beat Bemidji State goaltender Zuzana Tomcikova on a one timer.

Bemidji State’s Montana Vichorek scored the equalizer for the Beavers early in the third period.  The sophomore scored unassisted as her slapshot hit the post then deflected off the back of MSU’s sophomore goaltender Alli Atlmann.

Minnesota State regained momentum when they capitalized on a power play at the 4:07 mark in the third period.  Senior forward Christina Lee beat Tomcikova stick side to give the Mavericks a 2-1 lead with 15:53 left in the game. Sophomore blueliner Ariel Mackley and Young both recorded assists on the play.  Lee extended her personal scoring streak to five games with the third period goal.

The Beavers pulled their goaltender with 1:37 left in the third period and took advantage of the extra skater as Annie Bauerfeld scored with 0:01 left on the clock.  The Beavers crowded the net and continued to attack as Erin Cody and Erin Johnson both assisted on the Bauerfeld goal.  

After the Beavers and Mavericks exchanged blows early in the shootout freshman Erika Wheelhouse beat Altmann to give the Beavers the edge. Tomcikova sealed the win for the Beavers as she denied sophomore Jackie Otto.  Otto was the 26th shooter of the shootout.

The Mavericks finished the night with 22 shots on goal while converting 1-5 on power play opportunities, while Bemidji State recorded 25 on goal while going 0-9 with the extra skater.

These two teams finish off the two-game series Saturday afternoon at 3:07 p.m. at the All Seasons Arena.
