Minnesota State Earns Third Straight Win of the Year at North Dakota

                Grand Forks, N.D. — The Minnesota State women's hockey team earned their third straight victory of the season this afternoon over the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux. The Mavericks a now 3-0 under new head coach Eric Means.

This is the first time MSU has opened a season 3-0 since the 2003-04 season and head coach Eric Means became the first Maverick coach in program history to open a season 3-0 in his first year.

North Dakota got on the board first with a even strength goal from Stephanie Roy who was assisted by Alyssa Wiebea and Mary Loken. It didn't take long for the Mavericks to tie the game, senior forward Christina Lee earned her first goal of the season when she scored 3:05 into the first period for even it up. Sophomore forward Emmi Leionen and  senior blueliner Holly Snyder earned the assists on the goal.

Minnesota State wasn't done yet in the first, junior forward Lisa Edman earned her third goal of the year with an assist from sophomore forward Moira O’Connor and Leinonen capitalized on a pass from junior forward Nina Tikkinen to finish out the first.

After a scoreless second period, the Mavericks increased their lead to 4-1 7:00 into the third period with Leinonen's second goal of the afternoon on passes from Tikkinen and O'Connor. North Dakota added a late goal in the third by Sara Dagenais, assisted by Ashley Furia.

Minnesota State's Leinonen earned her fourth and fifth points of the season wit her two goals and now leads MSU in both goals (4) and is tied for first in points (5). Snyder increased her point total to five with her assist and now owns a team high four assists on the season.

Sophomore goaltender Alli Altmann increased her record to 3-0-0 with the win. Altmann saved 28 shots and only allowed two goals. She now owns 75 saves, a 1.67 goals against average and a .938 save percentage on the year.

The Mavericks (3-0-0 overall, 1-0-0-0 WCHA) will wrap up the series at Grand Forks against the Fighting Sioux tomorrow afternoon. The puck drops at 2:07 p.m.
