Mavericks Down Upper Iowa to Remain Alive at 2009 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Baseball Tourney
Minnesota State Claims 12-3 Win over Peacocks Saturday Night in St. Cloud as Dale Fans 11
St. Cloud, Minn. — Minnesota State turned back Upper Iowa 12-1 in an elimination game at the 2009 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference baseball tournament being held at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud Saturday.
Following a scoreless three-and-half innings, the Mavericks took the lead when freshman rightfielder Ben Kincaid deposited the ball over the rightfield fence for a three-run homer. The homer is the third of the year for the Eau Claire, Wis., native.
MSU used five hits, five walks and two Upper Iowa errors to score eight runs in the bottom of the fifth in breaking the game open and then added another run in the bottom of the eighth on a Corey LaPlante RBI single to complete the scoring.
Sophomore leftfielder Danny Miller was two-for-five with three runs batted in and senior third baseman Geno Glynn was two-for-five and one RBI.
Senior righthander Jimmy Dale, who upped his record to 4-0 with the win, gave up two earned runs, 10 hits, five walks and fanned a career-high 11 UIU batters in 8.1 innings.
Since dropping a 16-6 decision to Upper Iowa to open the tournament Thursday, the Mavericks have downed Augustana (14-4), Southwest Minnesota State (6-5) and Upper Iowa (12-3).
The Mavericks, who are now 36-15 on the year, face Wayne State (Neb.) tomorrow to determine the 2009 NSIC championship. Wayne State has won both of its games at the double-elimination tournament and the Mavericks will have to defeat the Wildcats twice in order to claim the league title. The first game is scheduled for a noon start.
