Mavericks to Conclude Regular Season vs. Warriors and Golden Bears

MANKATO, Minn. --- Minnesota State wraps up its regular season schedule this week as it takes on Winona State and Concordia-St. Paul. MSU will host the Warriors on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., before traveling to CSP on Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. game to finish the regular season.

Minnesota State History: The 2025-26 season marks the 104th campaign as a varsity sport for Minnesota State men's basketball. The Mavericks are 1,486-969 (.605) in 2,455 games since the program's inception in the 1920-21 season. Since joining the NSIC prior to the start of the 2008-09 season, MSU has put together a 257-131 (.662) conference record to go with five regular-season championships and three tournament championships.

The Mavericks won the 2023-24 NSIC regular season championship with an 82-62 win over Minnesota Crookston on Feb. 23. It marked their first NSIC Championship since the 2013-14 season. MSU then went on to win the NSIC Tournament Championship with its 97-77 win over Minnesota Duluth in the finals of the conference tournament. The Mavericks would go on to win their first NCAA Championship as they defeated Nova Southeastern 88-85 in the NCAA Championship game.

Against the Warriors: Thursday's game between Minnesota State and Winona State marks their 153rd all-time meeting, with MSU leading the series with a 96-56 record against the Warriors. Earlier this season in McCown Gymnasium, Winona State bested Minnesota State 83-75.

Senior Malcolm Jones tallied 24 points and six rebounds, while junior Caden Kirkman tallied a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Colton Benson added 18 points as well.

For the Warriors, Gavyn Hurley recorded a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Ryan Heise notched 15 points. Alessandro Tonelli added 14 points and five rebounds also.

Head Coach Matt Margenthaler owns a 22-26 record against Winona State, including an 11-11 record at Taylor Center.

Against the Golden Bears: Saturday's game between Minnesota State and Concordia-St. Paul marks their 46th all-time meeting, with the Mavericks leading the series 37-8. Earlier this season at Taylor Center, CSP bested MSU 89-77.

Junior Traijan Sain recorded 19 points and five rebounds, while Malcolm Jones tallied 14 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Will Opsahl posted 19 points as well.

Ben Kopetzki led CSP with 26 points, while Sam West added 22 points and eight rebounds. Ryan Johnson notched 15 points and eight rebounds also.

Head Coach Matt Margenthaler owns an 35-7 record against Concordia-St. Paul, including a 16-4 record on the road.

Concerning the Mavericks: Minnesota State enters the week the owner of an 18-10 record, including a 12-8 NSIC record. Last week on the road, MSU fell to Augustana 95-83, before defeating Wayne State 81-69.

As a team, MSU is averaging 78.8 points and 37.1 rebounds per game, while shooting 44.9% from the field and 33.4% from three point range. The Mavericks have passed out 340 assists and have forced 316 turnovers.

Junior Traijan Sain is averaging 13.3 points and 3.5 rebounds per game, while senior Malcolm Jones has tallied 12.2 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Junior Arhman Lewis is posting 12.2 points and 5.9 assists per game, while Junior Caden Kirkman has notched 10.9 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. Freshman Colton Benson is averaging 9.9 points per game and leads the team in three pointers with 49.

The Mavericks are led by Matt Margenthaler, who is in his 25th season at Minnesota State. He owns a career record of 525-232 (.693). 

Concerning the Warriors: Winona State enters the week the owner of a 9-16 record, including an 8-12 NSIC record. WSU has lost its last three games, including a pair of road loss to Southwest Minnesota State (79-71) and Sioux Falls (85-70) last week.

As a team, WSU is averaging 68.6 points and 32.2 rebounds per game this season, while shooting 44.0% from the field and 31.9% from three point range. The Warriors have passed out 273 assists and have forced 254 turnovers.

Tyler Mason leads the Warriors with 14.0 points a game and in three pointers made with 57. Ryan Heise is posting 13.9 points and 5.8 rebounds per game also, while Gavyn Hurley has notched 12.9 points and 6.9 rebounds a game.

Winona State is coached by Todd Eisner who is in his 11th season as head coach with the Warriors and his 28th season overall. He owns a 167-134 (.555) record at Winona State and a 583-300 (.660) career record.

Concerning the Golden Bears: Concordia-St. Paul enters the week the owner of an 18-8 overall record, including a 13-7 NSIC record. CSP has won its last three games, including a pair of road wins at Sioux Falls (94-84) and Southwest Minnesota State (78-69) last week.

As a team, CSP is averaging 83.8 points and 37.0 rebounds per game this season, while shooting 46.2% from the field and 38.1% from three point range. The Golden Bears have passed out 414 assists and have forced 369 turnovers.

Ben Kopetzki is averaging 21.3 points per game and leads the team in three pointers with 70. Owen Carlson is averaging 13.2 points and 4.0 rebounds per game, while Sam West has notched 11.2 points and 5.2 assists a game.

Concordia-St. Paul is coached by Matt Fletcher, who is in his sixth season as head coach of the Golden Bears and 10th season overall. He owns a 62-93 (.400) record at CSP and a 138-126 (.523) career record.

1,000 Point Watch: Minnesota State junior Traijan Sain recorded his 1,000 career point when he tallied 29 points against Augustana (2/12/26). He has now tallied 1,035 career points.

Junior Arhman Lewis has recorded 905 career points and is just 95 points away from reaching 1,000 for his career.
