PREVIEW: #16 Mavericks Return to Host Beavers

MANKATO, Minn. - No. 16 Minnesota State men's hockey meets Bemidji State for the first and only weekend series in the CCHA regular season Friday at 7:07 p.m. CT and Saturday at 6:07 p.m. CT. Both games can be watched on MidcoSportsPlus.com and heard on AM 1420 KTOE. Following a slow start to the new year, the Mavericks have regrouped well, with recent CCHA victories over No. 14 Augustana and a pair at Ferris State.

The Mavericks are currently fifth in the CCHA standings with six games to play. Bemidji State is in sixth, seven points behind MSU. St. Thomas leads the league with 47 points, followed by Michigan Tech (45 pts), Augustana (42 pts) and Bowling Green (40 pts). This weekend's series is sponsored by Courtyard by Marriott and Saturday's game is Make A Wish Night at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center.

ALL-TIME SERIES
  • Minnesota State leads the all-time series with Bemidji State 70-64-17. The Mavericks are 4-5-1 over the past 10 matchups.
  • After going 2-1-1 against BSU during the 2024-25 regular season, the Mavericks defeated the Beavers 4-0 on March 15, 2025 in the CCHA Semifinals at Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center.

LAST TIME OUT

  • With four second-period goals on Saturday night, Minnesota State men's hockey skated away from Ewigleben Ice Arena with an important CCHA series sweep at Ferris State. The final tally was 4-3, and the Mavericks fended off more than two minutes of a Bulldog empty net late in the third period.
  • Four different goal scorers contributed for MSU, including freshmen Reid Morich and Mason LeBel, both of whom also found the scoresheet on Friday. MSU broke its power play drought (0-23) and finished 2-for-3 with the man advantage while Ferris State converted 2-4 power plays. Tracy made 29 saves for the Mavericks and Noah Rupprecht turned aside 28 shots for the Bulldogs. The Mavericks won 32 of 62 draws.
  • Freshmen contributed four goals to propel Minnesota State men's hockey to a 6-1 win at Ferris State Friday night. Freshman Reid Morich (Fountain Hills, Ariz.) led the team with two goals and MSU dominated with 40 shots, scoring six goals for the first time this season. Jack Smith won 13 of 18 faceoffs. Alex Tracy made ten saves for his 14th win of the season. Hedquist finished with 34 saves for Ferris State.

TEAM LEADERS

  • The Mavericks are averaging 2.8 goals per game and 30.6 shots per game. Senior Tristan Lemyre (Edmonton, Alberta) leads the forward group with 23 points (12 goals, 11 assists). Evan Murr (Stillwater, Minn.) leads MSU defensemen with 22 points (six goals, 16 assists).

TRUST IN TRACY

  • Tracy leads the CCHA in goals against average (2.02) and ranks third in save percentage (.923). 
  • Tracy was also named CCHA Goaltender of the Month for November. Starting all nine games in November, he totaled 246 saves for a .939 save percentage.
  • His shutout at Northern Michigan (Nov. 28) moved him into a tie for third place on the MSU men's hockey all-time career shutouts chart with 10 (Stephon Williams).

SPECIAL TEAMS REPORT

  • The Mavericks converted 2 of 9 power play opportunities against Ferris State, while the penalty kill was successful on 5 of 8 tries. Alex Zetterberg and Reid Morich posted power play goals on Saturday, the first extra-man goals for MSU since Dec. 13 vs. Augustana (Reid Morich).
  • The Maverick power play is executing at a 21.8-percent rate this season (22-101).
  • All three of Charlie Lurie's goals have come on the power play. Last season, Lurie skated in 20 games for Omaha and scored three of his four goals on power play. Tristan Lemyre leads the team with four power play goals.

SCOUTING THE BEAVERS

  • Bemidji State split a home series against Ferris State last week, with a 6-3 loss on Friday and 4-3 overtime win on Saturday. In the latter, Vincent Labelle scored 1:12 into the extra session at Sanford Center. The Beavers scored two power play goals, though Ferris State drew even with a pair of third period goals. 
  • Labelle netted a goal on six shots. Oliver Peer made a significant impact with two goals, including one on the power play and added an assist while winning 12 of 18 faceoffs. Peer has recorded three or more points in two consecutive games. Reilly Funk also scored with a power play goal and registered two shots. Hudston Thornton contributed two assists and a plus-2 rating.
  • Peer, a junior forward from Burlington, Ontario, leads the Beavers with 17 goals (second in CCHA) and 13 assists (19th in CCHA) for 30 points (fifth in CCHA). He also has three game-winning goals and netted his first career hat trick on Nov. 22 against Northern Michigan. Peer has four goals and four assists over his past three games for BSU.
  • Bemidji State has utilized all three goaltenders. Freshman Max Hildebrand has 18 starts and holds a 6-11-1 record with a 3.14 goals against average and an .880 save percentage. Junior Raythan Robbins has 12 starts, with a 5-5-2 record, 2.65 goals against average and .892 save percentage.
  • The Beavers were selected to finish sixth in the CCHA standings in two conference preseason polls. Head coach Tom Serratore (Coleraine, Minn.) has coached over 900 games for the Beavers since 2001 and was an assistant coach with the program from 1999-2001. As a head coach, he has been a Spencer Penrose Award Finalist nine times and conference coach of the year eight times. He also has three conference tournament titles and one NCAA Frozen Four appearance. 
  • The Beavers finished 15-18-5 last season, including 10-12-4 in the CCHA. The Beavers eliminated Augustana in three games in the Mason Cup quarterfinals, including a 3-2 overtime win in the deciding game on March 9.

HEADED TO THE POLLS

  • Minnesota State men's hockey was ranked No. 16 by USCHO.com and USA Hockey in NCAA Division I National polls on Monday. The Mavericks ranked No. 17 last week. Michigan State topped the national poll for the first time this season, after Michigan led for six straight weeks. 
  • Fellow CCHA institutions, St. Thomas (No. 15), Augustana (No. 18) and Michigan Tech (No. 17) also appeared in the top-20 rankings. Bowling Green received national votes. It was the third time this season that four CCHA teams appeared in the national rankings.

CCHA ANNOUNCED ALL-ACADEMIC TEAMS

  • The Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) announced the 2025-26 All-Academic Team and 19 Maverick student-athletes were recognized for maintaining a grade point average of 3.0 or higher (on a 4.00 scale). In addition, 14 MSU student-athletes earned CCHA Scholar-Athlete Team honors for achieving a grade point average of 3.50 or higher. 
  • Ferris State has a league-best 30 honorees, while Augustana, Bemidji State and Minnesota State all have 19. The 2025-26 All-Academic Team and 159 student-athletes have been recognized for maintaining a grade point average of 3.0 or higher (on a 4.00 scale).
