CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- Minnesota State went 1-2 on day one of the NWCA National Duals Friday evening.

MSU started the day with a 28-7 loss to #12 Grand Valley State, before defeating West Liberty 24-10. The Mavericks then finished their day with a 24-14 loss to #13 St. Cloud State.

Minnesota State now owns a 7-3 dual record on the season.

The NWCA National Duals resume on Saturday at 9:00 a.m.
 
Minnesota State vs. #12 Grand Valley State Recap

Minnesota State began the day with a 28-7 loss to #12 Grand Valley State. The Mavericks won a pair of matches against the Lakers as senior Caleb Meunier (157 lbs.) and junior Jaquan East (184 lbs.).

Meunier picked up a 15-3 major decision victory over GVSU's Maclain Morency. Morency got the opening takedown in the first round, but Meunier would go on to record the final 15 points of the match, which included three takedowns and three escapes, to secure the 15-3 win.

East earned a 7-1 win over GVSU's Wyatt Miller. All eight points were tallied in the first round, including a takedown and a four-point nearfall by East.

Minnesota State vs. West Liberty Recap

Minnesota State prevailed in its second dual of the day as the Mavericks bested West Liberty 24-10. MSU won seven of the 10 matches of the dual, including one via fall.

After falling behind 4-0 after the first match a pair of decision wins from sophomores Chase Becket (133 lbs.) and Colton Hush (141 lbs.). Beckett bested James Armstrong Jr. 7-2, while Hush defeated Khyvon Grace 6-3.

Junior Walker Bents (149 lbs.) won the fourth match of the dual as scored a fall at the 2:01 mark against Joey Sentipal. Bent's win put the Mavericks in front by the score of 12-4.

A 3-0 decision win by Meunier (157 lbs.) put the Mavericks up 15-4, but a pair of decision wins by West Liberty in the 165 lbs. and 174 lbs. matches cut MSU's lead to 15-10.

Unfazed, the Mavericks would win the final three matches via decision to lock down the 24-10 win. East (184 lbs.) defeated Gabe Bussenbach 4-3, before junior Grant Cook (197 lbs.) topped Levi Abbot 8-1. Sophomore Jesus Gonzalez added a 2-1 win over Parker Bentley to wrap up the dual.

The Mavericks finished the day with a 24-14 loss to St. Cloud State. MSU won four of the 10 matches in the dual.

MSU opened the dual winning three of the first four matches. Sophomore Jacob Fitzpatrick (125 lbs.) defeated Benjamin Aranda via a 12-2 major decision, before Beckett (133 lbs.) posted an 11-5 win over Ethan Bast. In the 149 lbs. match, Bents would earn a major decision win as he won 11-0 against Vance Barz.

Sophomore Jesus Gonzalez (285 lbs.) earned a 3-2 decision win over Donnie Hidden as well.
