Weight Throw Highlights Mark Schuck Open & Multi Day 1 for MSU

MANKATO, Minn. - Minnesota State men's track and field finished day one of the Mark Schuck Open and Multi at Myers Field House late Friday night.
 
The meet began with men's heptathlon. Jonny Cheney (Sioux Falls) leads the field through four events. The final three events, 60 meter hurdles, pole vault and 1000 meters will be completed on Saturday. Minnesota State's Jonah McCormick took third in heptathlon high jump and is currently 10th with a score of 2,378.
 
UW-Platteville's Zach Sporaa set a meet record in 3000 meters with a time of 8:18.76. MSU's Biruk Killeen crossed the line 10th with a personal best time of 8:51.09.
 
Another meet record fell in 300 meters. It was the Mavericks' own Rinaldo Moore with the first place finish in a time of 34.11. Quinton Ellis also topped the record with his second place time of 34.28. St. Thomas's Johnny Bezdicek was third with another meet record time of 34.43.
 
MSU junior Marenono Opiew stood atop the field in 500 meters with his time of 1:05.68. Qai Hussey also represented the Mavericks well with his first place 200 meter time of 21.98 (season best). Teammate Tyreese James was third (22.10).
 
In the field, Blake Wakeling took first place in pole vault with a personal best mark of 4.79m (15-8.50). It was the 37th best mark in NCAA Division II this season. 

MSU swept the top three spots and five of the top ten in weight throw on Friday. First place Hayden Bills (defending NSIC Field Athlete of the Week) set a personal best and landed at 18.69m (61-4.00). The mark was 32nd in Division II this season. Right behind were Henry Warsaw (17.15m, 56-3.25) and Ben Wieser (16.88m, 55-4.75). Both were personal bests.
 
The Mavericks are back in action Saturday at Myers Field House. Track events begin at 10 a.m. with field events set for noon.
