Meet Records Fall at Maverick Open #2

MANKATO, Minn. – No. 16 Minnesota State men's outdoor track and field competed in the last home meet of the season on Friday, May 2 at the Maverick Open #2. The meet took place at the Mark Schuck Outdoor Track and Field Complex and the Mavericks finished first in a field of eight collegiate teams with 229 points.

"Our team battled through tough weather conditions and competed hard," said head coach Mike Turgeon. "We're looking forward to the NSIC Championships in Duluth as we work to defend our outdoor titles from last season."
 
Keaton Wattier led the Mavericks in 110 meter hurdle prelims with a first place time of 14.47 (52nd in Division II). Wattier then took second place in 110 meter finals with an even better time of 14.20 (26th in Division II).
 
Benjamin Geeslin set a personal best for first place in 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:19.42. Qamerin Hussey also crossed the line third in 400 meters with a time of 50.03.
 
Four Mavericks set meet records in 800 meters, including first place Kaleb Foltz (1:52.10), third place Paul Lins (1:55.67), fourth place Grant Mayers (1:55.76) and fifth place Zachariah Klassen (1:56.16).
 
Logan Weninger hit a personal record and finished third in 400 meter hurdles with a meet record time of 54.44 (100th in Division II). Jonah McCormick's time of 55.19 was also a meet record in fourth place.
 
Four athletes from St. Thomas took the top spots in 200 meters, with MSU's Marvin Dure in fifth (21.69, season best).
 
Another meet record fell in 1500 meters, with Jacob Bennett in first place (3:58.92). Teammate Luke Scholtes followed in second (4:01.31).
 
Ben Wieser closed out shot put by winning the event at 16.31m (53-6.25). Henry Warsaw led the way in discus with a mark of 45.95m (150-09). Justin Fretag was also second with a mark of 45.37m (148-10).
 
Dylan Gross won discus throw with his toss of 53.81m (176-06). Pole vault was moved inside Myers Field House and the Mavericks nabbed four of the top five positions. Collin Windorski was first with a meet record 4.79m (15-8.50). Blake Wakeling also surpassed the meet record in second place at a height of 4.79m (15-8.50, personal best, 52nd in Division II).
 
In long jump, Slade Heald topped the podium, landing at 7.01m (23-00) for the Mavericks. Then Sheldon McNicholas posted the meet record and a personal best first place mark in triple jump at 15.33m (50-3.05, 9th in Division II).
 
Liam Byrne set a meet record when he finished second in hammer throw with a mark of 58.56 (192-01).
 
Minnesota State men's track and field continues into the postseason next week, with competition at the NSIC Outdoor Championships May 8-10 at James S. Malosky Stadium in Duluth, Minnesota.
