Mavericks to Host NCAA Central Region Tournament

MANKATO, Minn – The Minnesota State baseball team has qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the 43rd time in program history. This will be the sixth straight dating back to the 2019 season.
The Mavericks will host the NCAA DII Central Sub Region 2 Tournament. It is the ninth time MSU has been selected to host and first since 2013.

The Mavericks hold a 49-6 overall record and have qualified for the last six NCAA tournaments. Minnesota State is 83-91 all-time in NCAA Tournament games, including a 37-32 record under head coach Matt Magers. This will be MSU's 15th trip to the NCAA Tournament under coach Magers. The Mavericks have made eight trips to the NCAA Championships (1971, 1979, 1980, 1986, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014).

The Mavericks host seventh-seed Arkansas Monticello on Thursday at 6 p.m. at ISG Field in Mankato and they are joined in the sub region by No. 3 seed Pittsburg State and No. 6 seed Henderson State. First pitch for the game between PSU and HSU is scheduled for Thursday at 2 p.m. Fans can watch both games on the NSIC Network.

First-seeded Central Missouri hosts #4 Central Oklahoma as well as #5 Arkansas Tech and #8 Harding in the other NCAA Central Sub Region.

Minnesota State won both the NSIC regular season and tournament championships.

Graduate Student Nathan Culley earned NSIC Outstanding Senior of the Year honors, first team all-conference honors, NSIC Pitcher of the Year and was named to the NSIC All-Tournament Team. Graduate student Ike Mezzenga was named NSIC Newcomer of the year, while senior Zach Stroh and freshman Jake Berkland were also named to the NSIC All-Tournament Team. Junior Louis Magers was named the NSIC Tournament MVP.

Last Time Out:
  • The Mavericks were crowned NSIC Tournament Champions
  • Mezzenga and Magers launched back-to-back homeruns in the bottom of the sixth inning.
  • MSU sent 14 batters to the plate and capitalized on walks, hit-by-pitches and hitting.
  • Magers launched another homerun, a three-run shot to right field that made it 17-5.
  • Berkland, Matthew Fleischhacker and Nick Baker all had multi hit, multi-RBI performances.
Scouting the Boll Weevils
  • John Harvey is in his 15th season as their head coach, he joined in September of 2010.
  • The Boll Weevil's are 376-281 under head coach Harvey and have won four GAC Championships and advanced to four NCAA Regionals during the last 10 seasons.
  • Chaz Poppy leads UAM with a .396 batting average including 60 RBI and nine home runs.
  • On the mound, Maxim Mrakovcic leads with a 4.01 ERA and an 8-2 overall record.
  • They have a 32-21 overall record, and a 21-12 GAC record.
  • The last time Minnesota State and Arkansas Monticello played each other was back in 2019, when the Boll Weevils beat the Mavericks  13-2.
