MANKATO, Minn. – Minnesota State will be well-represented at the 2025 IIHF Women's World Championship, as head coach Shari Dickerman and alumna Alli Altmann have been named to the coaching staff, while former Maverick Anna Wilgren has earned a roster spot.
Wilgren, currently playing for the Montreal Victoire, had a standout career at Minnesota State. She appeared in three games during the 2022-23 season prior to a season-ending injury, scoring one goal. Over her five-year tenure with the Mavericks, she served as a team captain for four seasons, beginning in her sophomore year. In 91 career games, she recorded 12 goals and 30 assists for 42 points, with four power-play goals and five game-winning tallies.
She becomes the first American-born Minnesota State alumni to wear the Red-White-and-Blue in the World Championship and joins former Maverick alumni Nina Tikkinen (2007-11), Emilla Andersson (2008-13), Lena Dusterhoft (2015-19) and Anna Fiegert (2013-17) as members who have played for their countries national team.
"Anna had an incredible career here at Minnesota State, making her presence felt both on and off the ice," said Dickerman on Wilgren. "Her competitive nature and desire to be the best have allowed her to continue her development at the professional level. We are excited to see her earn this opportunity to play at the highest level in our sport and wish her all the best with Team USA."
Tikkinen, played a pair of Winter Olympic Games for Finland and competed at eight World Championships as a member of the Finnish National Team from 2007 through 2017. Andersson played in three Winter Olympic Games for Sweden and competed in eight World Championships as a member of the Swedish National Team from 2007 through 2017. Dusterhoft skated for Germany in the World Championship five times between 2015 and 2022, while Fiegert played for Germany in the World Championship five times between 2015 and 2021.
Altmann, who will serve as a goaltending coach for the national team, played for the Mavericks from 2008-12 before joining Minnesota State's staff as an assistant coach for the 2023 season. Altmann has served as a goaltending coach for the USA National Team for the last four seasons.
Dickerman, who just finished her first season as head coach of the Mavericks, was an All-American goaltender for Minnesota State from 2000-04. She and Altmann were part of Team USA's coaching staff when they won gold at the 2023 IIHF Women's World Championship and secured silver in 2024 after falling to Canada in overtime. During the past three seasons, she also served as an assistant coach for the Americans in the Rivalry Series.
The 2025 IIHF Women's World Championship will take place from April 9-20 in České Budejovice, Czechia.
