Mankato, Minn. -- Minnesota State women's hockey team named Hailey Hansen (Blaine, Minn.) its team captain, and Lauren Zawoyski (Edina, Minn.) and Sophie Stramel (Apple Valley, Minn.) as alternate captains for the 2026-27 season. 

"We are excited for this trio to lead our group.  They all encompass what it means to be a Maverick. They are selfless leaders who always put the team above themselves," said head coach Shari Dickerman. " They champion their teammates' successes, while holding a high standard as individuals in all facets of their lives.  They lead both vocally and by example and we cannot wait to see how far they will take us this season." 

Hansen is entering her senior season as the Mavericks goaltender. In her three seasons at Minnesota State, she has been between the pipes in 76 games, tallying 28 wins with a .904 save percentage and a 3.03 goals-against average. As a junior she posted 14 wins with five shutouts, to the tune of a .915 save percentage and a 2.87 goals-against average. Hansen's nine career shutouts, and 28 career wins are second all-time in Maverick's history. She currently sits sixth on the Maverick's all-time saves list with 2,051 saves.  

Hansen will wear the C following the graduation of Taylor Otremba (Lakeville, Minn.) who finished sixth on the MSU all-time scoring list with 92 points.  Her career accolades include WCHA Scholar Athlete (twice) ACHA Krampade All-American Scholar (twice) WCHA Goaltender of the Month (twice) and WCHA Goaltender of the Week (four times).  Hansen was a member of the 25-person US College Selects Team that competed in Richmond, B.C. earlier this month. 

Zawoyski will be a senior defender this season. Last year she skated in all 38 games for the Mavericks, totaling three goals and 18 assists for 21 points.  Her 18 assists led the team, and her 21 points were third most in a season by a Maverick defender. She also recorded 104 shots which led the team, and 39 blocked shots.  Zawoyski has skated in 113 games over her three years as a Maverick recording four goals, 24 assists, and 28 total points. She is a three-time ACHA Krampade All-American Scholar, and a WCHA Scholar Athlete (twice). After the 2025-26 season, Zawoyski was named a WCHA outstanding student athlete of the year finalist, and she was also a member of the 25-person US College Selects Team alongside Hansen.   

Stramel is entering her sophomore season as a member of the forward core for the Mavericks. As a freshman, she skated in all 38 games, recording four goals and eight assists for a total of 12 points.  Her 33 blocks led all forwards, and her 286 faceoff wins led the team. Her all-around game helped her finish the season with an even plus/minus rating. Stramel scored two power-play goals which was tied for second most on the team. She scored her first career goal vs Ohio State on January 16, 2026.  

The Mavericks begin the season at home on the weekend of September 25-26 as they take on RPI. Puck drop is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Friday, with Saturday's set for 2:00 p.m.
