#13 Mavericks Open NSIC Action with Dominant Showing at Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. --- #13 Minnesota State opened its NSIC schedule with a strong showing Friday evening as the Mavericks bested Sioux Falls 32-5.

MSU now owns a 1-0 dual record on the season, including a 1-0 NSIC record. USF drops to 0-1, including a 0-1 record in NSIC duals.

In total, the Mavericks won eight of the 10 matches, including one fall, two tech falls and a major decision

Sophomore Jacob Fitzpatrick (125 lbs.) started the dual off with an 8-3 decision win over Vincent Mayberry. Fitzpatrick notched a pair of takedowns in the match to help secure his eight win decision of the season. Junior Chase Beckett (133 lbs.) recorded three takedowns to defeat USF's Cyler Ruhoff via a 11-4 decision to secure his fifth decision win of the season.

USF's Jordon Oehme (141 lbs.) bested MSU sophomore Colton Hush via a 10-3 decision to cut MSU's team lead to 6-3, before junior Walker Bents (149 lbs.) won via a 27-9 tech fall at 6:28. Bents notched six takedowns and a pair of 3-point nearfalls to help secure his second tech fall of the season.

In the 157 lbs. match, USF's Cooper Sanders came away with the 8-1 decision over MSU senior Caleb Meunier. Sophomore Paolo Salminen (165 lbs.) answered right back in the next match he secured his second major decision win of the season as he bested Luke Swanson 12-2.

Senior Drake Hayward (174 lbs.) recorded his fifth win via fall of the season as he pinned Ashtin Johnson at 4:27 in the second round. Junior Jaquan East (184 lbs.) followed up with an 18-2 tech fall at 6:00 over USF's Mishael Mauck, marking his team-leading fifth tech fall of the season.

In the 197 lbs. match, MSU junior Grant Cook and Hank Meyer were tied 5-5 heading into the third round. Cook then managed to record an escape and a takedown to go back up 9-5, before coming away with the 10-6 decision as time expired. Junior Joshua Gaye (285 lbs.) finished the dual with a 7-6 decision win over USF's Stetson Davis. Gaye has now won four matches via decision on the season.

Minnesota State wraps up its weekend on Saturday as it takes on the Augustana Vikings. The dual is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. at Elmen Center.
