Mavericks to Return to Action this Saturday at St. Cloud State

MANKATO, Minn. --- Minnesota State continues its five-game road swing this weekend as it travels to St. Cloud State on Saturday to take on the Huskies. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Halenbeck Hall.

Minnesota State History: The 2025-26 season marks the 104th campaign as a varsity sport for Minnesota State men's basketball. The Mavericks are 1,475-967 (.604) in 2,442 games since the program's inception in the 1920-21 season. Since joining the NSIC prior to the start of the 2008-09 season, MSU has put together a 246-129 (.656) conference record to go with five regular-season championships and three tournament championships.

The Mavericks won the 2023-24 NSIC regular season championship with an 82-62 win over Minnesota Crookston on Feb. 23. It marked their first NSIC Championship since the 2013-14 season. MSU then went on to win the NSIC Tournament Championship with its 97-77 win over Minnesota Duluth in the finals of the conference tournament. The Mavericks would go on to win their first NCAA Championship as they defeated Nova Southeastern 88-85 in the NCAA Championship game.

Against the Huskies: Saturday's game between Minnesota State and St. Cloud State marks their 196th all-time meeting, with MSU leading the series 98-97. Earlier this season, SCSU bested MSU 73-53 in Taylor Center.

Senior Malcolm Jones led the Mavericks with 15 points, eight rebounds and five blocks, while junior Traijan Sain added nine points. Junior Arhman Lewis tallied seven points and six rebounds also.

Anish Ramlall and Bob Griechen each tallied 15 points for the Huskies, while Kynan Philippe added seven points and 10 rebounds.

Head Coach Matt Margenthaler owns a 27-20 record against St. Cloud State, including an 11-9 record at Halenbeck Hall.

Concerning the Mavericks: Minnesota State enters the week the owner of a 7-8 record, including a 1-6 NSIC record. During their most recent outings on the road, MSU fell to Southwest Minnesota State 78-66 and Sioux Falls 98-90.

As a team, MSU is averaging 77.3 points and 38.7 rebounds per game, while shooting 43.9% from the field and 29.6% from three point range. The Mavericks have passed out 179 assists and have forced 172 turnovers.

Senior Malcolm Jones leads the Mavericks with 14.4 points and 8.2 rebounds per game this season. Junior Traijan Sain has notched 12.5 points and 3.4 rebounds per game, while junior Caden Kirkman has tallied 11.3 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. Freshman Colton Benson has tallied 9.4 points a game, including a team-leading 25 three pointers. 

The Mavericks are led by Matt Margenthaler, who is in his 25th season at Minnesota State. He owns a career record of 515-231 (.690). 

Concerning the Huskies: St. Cloud State enters the week the owner of a 7-5 record, including a 5-2 NSIC record. In its most recent games on the road, SCSU fell to both Sioux Falls 82-77 and Southwest Minnesota State 64-54.

As a team, SCSU is averaging 75.2 points and 42.6 rebounds per game this season, while shooting 41.5% from the field and 28.5% from three point range. The Huskies have passed out 139 assists and have forced 159 turnovers.

Luke Winkel is averaging 20.5 points and 4.4 assists per game this season, while Wyatt Hawks has tallied 10.8 points and 8.6 rebounds a game. Bob Griechen has posted 10.3 points and 5.1 rebounds per game also.

St. Cloud State is coached Quincy Henderson who is in his fourth season as head coach of the Huskies. He owns a 49-52 (.485), including a 2-6 (.250) record against the Mavericks.
