DAVOS, Switzerland – Minnesota State men's hockey senior
Alex Tracy has been selected to participate in the 2025 Spengler Cup, joining a squad of college hockey players representing NCAA Division I hockey in the prestigious men's tournament.
Â
Held annually in Davos, Switzerland, since 1923, the six-team invitational tournament traditionally features club and national teams from Europe and North America. It is hosted by the Swiss professional team HC Davos each year from Dec. 26-31 at Eisstadion Davos.
Â
The 2025 tournament will be the first time a select team representing college hockey has ever competed in the event. Officially named the U.S. Collegiate Selects, the team is comprised of active NCAA Division I players of any nationality representing all six conferences and the Division I independent programs.
Â
Tracy (Chicago, Ill.) is in his fourth season with the Mavericks and is one of the most prolific goaltenders in program history. Last season, Tracy was a Hobey Baker Award Top-10 finalist as well as a Mike Richter Award Finalist. The Second Team All-American was the CCHA Player of the Year after he led the nation in goals against average (1.424) and save percentage (.946). He made 29 saves to help the Mavericks secure the Mason Cup Championship vs. St. Thomas in March and made 42 saves in the NCAA Fargo Region semifinals against eventual National Champion Western Michigan.
Â
"It is a very well-deserved opportunity," said head coach
Luke Strand. "Alex has shown the ability to compete and win on big stages over his career. We're excited for him to represent our program."
All returning First and Second Team AHCA/CCM All-Americans received an automatic invitation to the roster. Additional players will be announced in the coming weeks.
The United States Collegiate Selects will face Team Canada to open play Spengler Cup play on December 26. Each team will play a minimum of three contests and maximum of five during the six-day event.
The tournament is being broadcast to over 20 countries, either through a partner or via livestream. Official word on how the games can be seen in the United States will be announced at a later date.
The U.S. Collegiate Select team will be made up of 25 student-athletes from across NCAA men's ice hockey, with each conference being represented. The competition runs from December 26-31, with the six participating teams. Along with the Selects, host HC Davos, Team Canada, HC Fribourg-Gotteron, Sparta Praha and IFK Helsinki will be taking part in the 2025 edition.
