Mavericks Hold Strong in Dual Against No. 1 Huskies

Mankato, Minn. – The Mavericks hosted No. 1 St. Cloud State in the first home dual of the season, ending with their first conference loss. With the loss, the Mavericks now have an overall record of 6-2, 3-1 NSIC.
 
The dual started at 125-lb. with freshman Jacob Fitzpatrick facing SCSU's Dominic Ducato. After a takedown by Ducato at 1:34, Fitzpatrick found a 2pt reversal with seconds left in the first period. The second period ended with Ducato leading 5-2. No scoring in the third led to a 6-2 decision loss for the Mavericks.
 
Freshman Chase Beckett was next at 133-lb. wrestling Caleb Meekins. After two takedowns by Meekins in the first and an escape by Beckett, Beckett received a point for stalling in the second, followed by finding a takedown to tie the score 6-6. Meekins chose neutral to start the third, allowing Beckett the opportunity to get a takedown with 23 seconds left to win 9-6, tying the team score at 3-3.
 
In 141-lb., freshman Colton Hush was up against No. 6 Alyeus Craig, ending with an 8-0 major decision win for Craig.
 
For the first match of the night with two ranked wrestlers, 149-lb. hosted redshirt-sophomore No. 13 Walker Bents against No.1 Colby Njos. After no scoring in the first period, Njos had a quick escape to start the second. After action late in the third, the score remained 1-0 when the final buzzer sounded, giving the 1-0 decision win to Njos.
 
The next ranked match came at 157-lb. between junior No. 12 Caleb Meunier and No. 5 Joel Jesuroga. Another no score during the first period led to Jesuroga being first on the board after an escape early in the second. Meunier chose down to start the third, escaping in three seconds to tie the score 1-1. The match went into overtime, ending with Jesuroga finding the takedown to win by a 4-1 decision.
 
In the last ranked match of the night, junior No. 14 Kole Marko met No. 2 Nick Novak on the mat at 165-lb. After no scoring in the first two periods, Novak chose the down position and found an escape in the first ten seconds of the third to lead the match 1-0. Novak would finish the match with 1pt of riding time, winning by a 2-0 decision.
 
At 174-lb. freshman Kaleb Lochner wrestled SCSU's No. 5 Bryce Dagel. Dagel won by a 20-6 major decision, bringing the team score to 20-3 for the Huskies.
 
R-Fr. Evan Farley, at 184-lb., faced No. 10 Bryce Fitzpatrick. After a takedown in each period, Fitzpatrick won by an 11-1 major decision.
 
In the 197-lb. match, freshman Jesus Gonzalez lost by fall at 5:53 to No. 4 Dominic Murphy.
 
The final match of the evening saw sophomore Tanner Gaffey, 285-lb., facing redshirt-sophomore Jadon Mims, ending with a 21-6 tech fall win by Mims, finishing the team score 35-3 SCSU.
 
Minnesota State is back on the mat in Taylor Center next Thursday, Jan. 30th to host No.3 UW-Parkside starting at 7 p.m.
