Minnesota State Olympians Compete in Paris

PARIS, France - The schedule is set for three current and former Minnesota State track & field athletes competing in the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris. They include senior Denisha Cartwright (Bahamas), junior Jabez Reeves (Liberia) and 2015 alumnus Emmanuel Matadi (Liberia).

ABOUT MATADI
A sprinter on the Minnesota State men's track & field team in 2014-15, Emmanuel Matadi competed for his home country of Liberia at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and the 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

The St. Paul (Minn.) Johnson High School grad set two indoor records in his one season with the Mavericks (60m/6.66 & 200m /21.10), to go along with outdoor marks in the 100m (10.19) and the 4x100m relay (40.15). His season culminated in a pair of NCAA Division II outdoor track & field championships in the 100m and 200m.

In Rio, Matadi posted a time of 10.31 in round one of the 100-meter dash event to rank 43rd and he placed fifth in his 200m first-round heat with a time of 20.49. His time placed him 30th overall. In Tokyo, he turned in a time of 10.25 in his first-round 100m heat to rank 35th.

ABOUT CARTWRIGHT
Denisha Cartwright's is the first women's track and field athlete from Minnesota State to qualify for the Olympics. She closed out her Maverick career with 30 All-America honors, including eight Division II indoor/outdoor National event titles. Cartwright finished her career with the NCAA Division II All-Time record in the 60 meter hurdles and was named the Honda Division II Women's Sports Athlete of the Year.

Cartwright will run the 100 meter hurdles in the Olympics, arguably her fastest event. At MSU, Cartwright collected four 100 meter hurdle All-American honors, along with three National Outdoor titles. Her top time is 12.60 seconds (1.6), set in the finals at the NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Mankato in May.

Cartwright hails from Nassau, Bahamas, where she qualified for her country in June. She came to the Mavericks in 2020 after a stint competing for Central State University.

ABOUT REEVES
Jabez Reeves calls Woodbridge, Virginia home in the states but is competing alongside Matadi for Liberia in Paris in the 4x100 meter relay. The duo are the first Mavericks to qualify for the Summer Olympics in track and field. This season, Reeves impressed at the Drake Relays in April, then won the 100 and 200 meter dash events at the NSIC Outdoor Championships.

He ran a leg of the 4x100 meter relay at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships and the Mavericks placed sixth as a team.

Reeves also clocked a time of 10.81 seconds in the 100 meter dash. The 2023-24 season was his first as a Maverick after kicking off his collegiate career at Wheeling. Reeves was also a four-time All-State selection at Garfield High School.
