WATERLOO, Iowa --- The Minnesota State women's golf team wrapped up a wind-whipped Upper Iowa Invite Sunday afternoon shooting a 330. The Mavericks finished the two-day event with a 327-330—657 finishing tied with Winona State, who shot a 326-331—657.
The Mavericks won the first-playoff hole which featured the top-five players each team. Senior
Anna Cihak birdied the par-four first hole and the remainder of the Mavericks scored par to clinch the team win.
The two-day event is being played at the Sunnyside Country Club, which is playing to 5,833 yards and is a par-72 track.
"We played through rain, wind and sleet," said assistant coach
Todd Pfingsten, who at one point saw his squad pulled off the course for over an hour because of rain. "It was a tough day. We were down three shots late and we found away.
Ava Olson went birdie-par on her final two holes to help force the playoff."
Every Maverick in the event finished in the top-11 paced by senior
Kelly Winter who shot an 80-81—162 en route to finishing second. Cihak finished third fourth with an 85-80—165, while freshman
Victoria Woytassek was fifth with a 78-88—166.
Freshman
Claire Schweim shot an 88-80—168 to finish tied for sixth with sophomore
Lauren Rebrovich shot an 86-82—168. Fellow sophomore
Samantha Youngquist shot an 83-86—169 to finish in ninth while sophomore
Ava Olson was tied for 11
th with an 88-84—172.
Carly Moon of Winona State won the event with a 76-76—152, finishing nine shots ahead of Winter.
Minnesota State finished shooting a 3.58 on par-threes to lead the field. The Mavericks recorded 81 pars on the weekend seven birdies. Woytassek led the field in par-four scoring with a 4.20. The average score for the course over the two days was 90.72.
Minnesota State returns to action next week as it travels to Wayne, Neb., to compete in the Wildcat Classic.
