MANKATO, Minn. --- Minnesota State (18-11, 14-5 NSIC) clinched its fourth consecutive conference series win of the season against Minot State (9-20, 6-13 NSIC) with finals of 14-12 and 16-5 at Bowyer Field on a windy Saturday afternoon.
After the Mavericks found themselves down 7-2 in the bottom of the third inning of game one, the Maverick bats started finding much-needed momentum.
Sophomore
Louis Magers provided the offensive spark for the Mavericks after launching his team-leading seventh home run of the year, scoring senior
Ryan Wickman to cut into the Beavers' lead.
Minot State and Minnesota State then traded off for five-run fourth innings, resulting in both teams reaching double-digit tallies. Following senior
Ryan Wickman's sixth home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth, inching the Mavericks closer to Minot State's lead, the Beavers would cough up their lead in the bottom of the sixth.
Senior
Ryan Friedges jump-started the Mavericks' offense in the sixth inning with a one-out double to center field and would later move to third on a freshman
Chayton Fischer single. The next batter, sophomore
Matthew Fleischhacker, would reach on an error by the shortstop, scoring Friedges to tie the game at 12. The Mavericks would claim their first lead in the game on a passed ball and would extend their lead to 14, courtesy of a junior
Aidan Byrne RBI single.
Junior
Jake Matthaidess (2-2) would retire the side in the top of the seventh, earning his second win of the season.
In game two, despite Minot State finding two early runs in the first inning, it was no match for the next 15 unanswered Minnesota State runs, seeing the Mavericks handle the Beavers 16-5 in seven innings.
Juniors
Zach Stroh and
Nick Baker led the Mavericks' offense in game two, combining for 6-7 at the plate while responsible for four runs and six RBIs.
Freshman
Mack Crowley (1-0) collected his first win as a Maverick, going four innings and only surrendering two runs, paired with a strikeout and no walks.
"Two big wins today from our club," head coach
Matt Magers stated. "We had an impressive comeback in game one, overcoming adversity, and saw big-time production from our lineup throughout the day. Matthaidess and Crowley kept a very good Minot State offense in check."
Minnesota State is back in action on Wednesday as it is set to host Winona State in its first weekday doubleheader of the season. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Bowyer Field.
