Minnesota State Sweeps Warriors in Weekday Doubleheader

MANKATO, Minn. --- Minnesota State (20-11, 16-5 NSIC) swept Winona State University (13-19 10-12 NSIC) in a Wednesday doubleheader at Bowyer Field by finals of 6-3 and 11-1.

After the Warriors claimed the first run in the top of the third of game one, the Mavericks responded in the bottom of the fourth collecting three runs on four hits to take a lead 3-1.

Junior Nick Baker opened the inning with a lead-off double and advanced to third on another two-base hit by sophomore Matthew Fleischhacker giving senior Adam Weed two runners in scoring position. Weed took full advantage punching a single through the left side of the diamond to give the Mavericks their first two runs of the day.

Two batters later, junior Aidan Byrne smoked a ball down the right field line resulting in his second triple on the season scoring Weed.

The Mavericks kept the pressure on Winona State in the bottom of the fifth scoring three runs on a wild pitch and a sophomore Tanner Thompson RBI double that scored Fleischhacker and Baker to extend its lead to 6-1.

Sophomore Ethan Stade would come in to shut the door to the Warriors in the seventh inning to collect his first save on the season.

The Mavericks would go on to control the entirety of game two scoring 11 runs in seven innings to mercy-rule Winona State. Minnesota State would see eight players record an RBI and nine players record a run in game two.

Junior Aidan Byrne lead the Mavericks offense going 2-4 while collecting two runs, two RBI, and his fourth home run of the season. The Mavericks' shortstop finished the day with a 1.375 slugging percentage following five hits and 11 total bases against Winona State pitching.

Freshman Cale Haugen (4-1) and junior Mitch Gutknecht (2-3) collected the wins by combining for 11 innings while allowing only seven hits and two runs with six strikeouts.

"Today was an impressive all-around team effort," head coach Matt Magers stated. "Solid pitching, dependable defense, and a persistent offensive attack delivered today's wins."

The Mavericks are back in action this weekend when they head to Bemidji State to take on the Beavers for a three-game series beginning at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.
