Box Score MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.. --- No. 4 Minnesota (26-8-2) downed Minnesota State (13-24-0) in game two of the WCHA Quarterfinals by a final of 7-1 Saturday afternoon at Ridder Arena.
The Gophers jumped on the Mavericks early netting their first tally just under five minutes into regulation. Minnesota's Ella Huber would then add her four goal on the series at the 9:12 mark of the first period. Just three minutes later, UM's Josefin Bouveng notched her 15th goal of the year giving the Gophers a 3-0 advantage midway through the first period.Â
The Mavericks would solve Minnesota's Lucy Morgan on the power play at the 14:14 mark of the period. Sophomore
Whitney Tuttle launched a shot from the right faceoff dot which produced a rebound opportunity for senior
Sydney Langseth who cashed in for her 15th tally on the season. On the play, sophomore
Taylor Otremba collected her 15th assist on the year.Â
After the Gophers notched two more goals in the first period, head coach
John Harrington made a goaltender switch favoring junior
Suzette Faucher. Minnesota would add two more tallies in the second period to lock up its 7-1 win forcing a game three.
"We expected Minnesota to come out hard and we didn't answer the call in the first period," stated Harrington. "We will need to regroup and refocus on the task tommorow."
The Mavericks will take on the Gophers in a final game three tomorrow at 3 p.m. Â to decide who moves on to the WCHA Final Faceoff.
