MANKATO, Minn. – The Minnesota State Mavericks (3-7-1, 1-7-1 WCHA) fell in a hard-fought overtime battle against the Ohio State Buckeyes (13-3-2, 8-3-2 WCHA) 2-1 Friday evening at the Mayo Clinic Health System Events Center.
The Mavericks' defense shined throughout the game, keeping the Buckeyes off the scoreboard until the third period, thanks in large part to an exceptional performance from goaltender
Hailey Hansen. Hansen turned away 36 of Ohio State's 38 shots, finishing with a .947 save percentage.
After a scoreless first two periods, Ohio State broke through early in the third, with Joy Dunne netting the game's first goal just two minutes into the frame. With time winding down and the Mavericks trailing 1-0,
Alexis Paddington delivered a clutch goal with just under a minute remaining in regulation, assisted by
Sydney Langseth and
Jamie Nelson, to force overtime.
The Buckeyes responded quickly in the extra frame, sealing the win with a goal in the second minute.
The teams will face off again on Saturday, November 22, at 2:02 p.m. for the second game of the series at the Mayo Clinic Health System Events Center.
