Minnesota State Takes Down #2 Ohio State

MANKATO, Minn. – The Minnesota State Mavericks (4-7-1, 2-7-1 WCHA) delivered a stunning 4-1 win over the second-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes (13-4-2, 8-4-2 WCHA) on Saturday afternoon at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center.

The Mavericks took an early lead as Claire Vekich scored just three minutes into the game, assisted by Taylor Otremba. Strong defense and an outstanding performance from goaltender Hailey Hansen kept the Buckeyes off the scoreboard, allowing Minnesota State to maintain a 1-0 lead through the first two periods. Hansen recorded a stellar .968 save percentage, stopping 30 of Ohio State's 31 shots on goal.

In the third period, Taylor Otremba extended the Maverick lead with a goal in the fifth minute, set up by Jayden Seifert. Ohio State responded three minutes later with their only goal of the game, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

Otremba struck again in the 15th minute, netting her second goal of the game off an assist from Madison Mashuga. With under two minutes remaining, and Ohio State's goalie pulled, Mashuga sealed the victory with an empty-net goal.

Despite being outshot 31-12, Minnesota State made the most of their opportunities and capitalized on Ohio State's mistakes to claim a 4-1 triumph. The Mavericks will return to action next weekend, traveling to Dartmouth for games on Friday, November 29, at 5 p.m. and Saturday, November 30, at 2 p.m.
