ST. PETER, Minn. – Minnesota State women's tennis concluded play in the Gustavus October Invite on Sunday at Swanson Tennis Center, a multi-day tournament.
Freia Lawrence fell to eventual champion and Mankato native Lauryn Douglas (Bethel) in round one of the No. 1 singles draw but bounced back with a pair of victories to become the consolation champion.
Â

Â
Hana Minisy found success in the No. 2 singles draw. After defeating Allison Szalay (Gustavus) and Ella Hancock (Sioux Falls), her championship opponent Molly Austin (Gustavus) retired at 5-5 in the opening set.
Â
"Hana has had an awesome fall," commented head coach Matt Hokanson. "She has taken a massive leap forward this semester and I was happy to see her win her singles flight and doubles flight with Taina (Cordeiro). They both played lights out today. It was also extra special, given that it was also Hana's 21
st birthday today."
Â
Georgia Deml and
Taina Cordeiro took third and fourth place respectively at No. 3 singles while
Sutton Julsrud vaulted to first place at No. 4 with a straight set win over Mylin Lemke (Sioux Falls).
Â
"Sutton played rock solid all weekend," said Hokanson. "She's gaining a ton of confidence on the singles court and it's been great to see her growth this fall."
Â
Brynn Psooy highlighted the No. 5 singles draw in second place after she fell in a 10-point tiebreaker to Maria Militor (Sioux Falls) 12-10, played in lieu of a full third set. Psooy also won a 10-point tiebreaker in the semifinal round to advance.
Â
Lawrence and Stilwell teamed to win a pair of matches at No. 1 doubles and the duo took third following a 6-4 set over Douglas and Sullivan (Bethel).
Â
Minisy and
Taina Cordeiro placed first at No. 2 doubles after closing with a victory over Haler and Thinnsen (Sioux Falls) 6-3. Taylor and
Sutton Julsrud played together in the No. 2 draw and won consolation.
Â
Deml and
Ellie Peterson also won the No. 3 doubles draw.
"It was great to see Georgia and Ellie team up and play some great doubles this weekend," said Hokanson. "They brought a lot of energy and it showed in their high level of play."
After four fall events, the Mavericks concluded their fall schedule on Sunday. The team will be back in action in the spring when they compete in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Last season, MSU women's tennis made it to the NSIC Championship before falling to No. 39 ranked Augustana.
Â
"We have a ton of confidence wrapping up the fall season," continued Hokanson. "Our main strength continues to be mental toughness and we won a lot of very close matches. We've shown we can buckle down when points get tight and find ways to win. With three months until our next match, we have some work to do but I feel good about where we currently are."
