DULUTH, Minn. – Minnesota State Volleyball (10-9, 5-6) defeated No. 10 Minnesota Duluth (14-6, 7-5), 3-1, on the Bulldogs' home court. The upset marks the first win against Minnesota Duluth for the Mavericks since 2015.
The Bulldogs were able to secure a hard-fought victory in the first set, holding out the Mavericks 25-23. But Minnesota State would not be contained for long; The Mavericks dominated the second set, finishing off Minnesota Duluth 25-17. The third and fourth sets ended in two hard-fought victories for the Mavericks, as Minnesota State took both 26-24.
Seniors
Sophie Tietz and
Emma Loveall both had 11 kills to lead the Mavericks offensively. The two seniors also combined for five aces.
Toryn Richards had nine kills of her own, as well as 11 digs. The Mavericks had 16 blocks as a team. Tietz and
Emily Kern led the team, each recording eight.
Kiya Durant had seven blocks of her own and five kills.
Brooke Bolwerk and
Skylar Walters split assist duties, combining for 32 assists. Bolwerk and
Ellie Kline both had 16 digs to lead the Mavericks.
Minnesota Duluth was led by
Cianna Selbitschka, who had 19 kills.
Madison Gordon had 34 assists.
"That was a gutsy win for us," said head coach
Corey Phelps. "I could not be prouder of this team. The team is figuring out how to step up in big moments. I can't think of a bigger moment than this."
The Mavericks are back on the road tomorrow afternoon, Saturday Oct. 20, at 2 p.m. to take on the No. 13 Huskies of St. Cloud State (15-6, 8-4). The match will be streamed on the NSIC Network.
