Aberdeen, S.D. – Minnesota State came up just short this evening against #20 Northern State in an NSIC dual, losing 19-17.
 
The dual started at 165 lb., with freshman Kole Marko picking up a a 4-2 decision win over Northern State's Chase Bloomquist. Junior Michael Smith added another decision win against Kelby Hawkins of 9-4. Together these two wins gave the Mavericks a quick 6-0 lead over the Wolves.
 
Northern State picked up a 6-1 decision at 184 and a major decision at 197 to take a 7-6 advantage into heavyweight.
 
Senior #7 Darrell Mason put Minnesota State back on top with a 6-3 win at 285-pounds, giving the Mavericks a 9-6 edge.
 
Northern State earned a forfeit at 125-pounds and picked up a victory at 133 to push its lead to 16-9. 
 
Senior 141-pounder #12 Brock Luthens picked up an 8-6 win in sudden victory to cut the Wolves lead to 16-12.  Northern State answered with a win at 149, before sophomore Drake Hayward closed out the dual with a 19-3 technical fall in 4:32. 
 
The Mavericks (4-3, 1-3 NSIC) are back on the mat tomorrow afternoon in Moorhead, Minn. to take on the MSU Moorhead Dragons at 3:00 p.m.
