BURNSVILLE, Minn. --- Minnesota State seniors Alijah McGhee and Jalen Sample have received NSIC weekly honors for their efforts on the road at Bemidji State last week.

McGhee was named the NSIC Defensive Player of the Week, while Sample claimed NSIC Offensive Player of the Week honors.

A linebacker from Warner Robbins, Ga., McGhee returned a fumble 70 yards for a touchdown and an interception 45 yards for a touchdown to put the Mavericks up 30-13 at halftime. He also tied for the team lead in tackles with eight.

A wide receiver from Onalaska, Wis., Sample led the Maverick receiving corps with six catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns against BSU. In the closing minutes of the game, Sample caught a 32-yard pass on a 4th and 16, before catching the game-wining touchdown pass with 1:38 to go in the game. 

Sample is the first Maverick to receive NSIC Offensive Player of the Week honors since JD Ekowa received the award in 2021 (10/18). McGhee is the first Maverick to claim NSIC Defensive Player of the Week honors since Alex Goettl did so back in 2018 (10/1).

Minnesota State continues its season at home this Saturday as it takes on Minnesota Duluth. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m., at Blakeslee Stadium.
