Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State men's track and field hosted the Ted Nelson Classic this Saturday on the campus of Minnesota State, Mankato inside the Myers Field House. The Mavericks were dominant from start to finish as they outclassed the competition and claimed the top-spot with a final score of 268.50 points.
In the 60m dash, freshman Prince Nti took first with a NCAA Provisional mark of 6.83 seconds. He followed up this performance with another podium finish by finishing second in the 300m dash with a time of 22.36.
In the 400 m dash, senior Josh Phelps finished second with a time of 50.84. Minnesota State was victorious in the 600m dash as junior Ben Schmied won with a time of 1:21.27. Then, in the 800m dash, Minnesota State's Leif Larsen finished second with a time of 1:58.56.
The 1000m run saw sophomore Tanner Maier finished first with a time of 2:25.58 which is a NCAA Division II provisional mark. Maier would grab back-to-back victories as he won the mile run with a time of 4:07.39 (converted for track size) for another NCAA provisional mark.
Freshman Ray Ure took the top-spot in the 3000m run with a time of 8:50.51. In the 5000m, freshman Jacob Bennett finished second with a time of 15:29.20.
Senior Nick Durnin went on to claim victory in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.20 which is a NCAA Provisional mark. The Mavericks took home a second-place finish in the 4 x 400 relay with a time of 3:21.54.
The high jump saw the Mavericks claim the top-two spots as freshman Jacob Ziebarth took home first with a distance of 2.00m (6' 6.75''). In the long jump, senior Caleb Kath was victorious with a jump of 7.31m (23' 11.75'') for a provisional mark that ranks 14th in Division II.
The Mavericks went on to take the top-two spots in the pole vault as sophomore Carson Dittel finished first with a vault of 4.83m (15' 10''). In the triple jump, freshman Onyi Ukaobasi finished second with a distance of 14.61m (47' 11.25'').
In the shot put, junior Steven Orzolek took home a second-place finish with a toss of 16.64m (54' 7.25''). The Mavericks claimed the top spot in the weight throw as junior Nicholas Hudson won the event with a throw of 19.51m (64' 0.25'') for a NCAA Provisional mark that ranks ninth in Division II.
Minnesota State returns to action next Saturday, Feb. 12 as the Mavericks host the NSIC & Friends Indoor Challenge all day in Myers Field House.
