Box Score Emporia, Kan. --- Minnesota State lost a tight game against the Missouri Southern State Lions 5-4 in day two of the Emporia State Softball Classic.
With the results, the Mavericks fall to 6-2 on the season while the Lions fall to 6-7.
Katie Bracken (1-1) started the game for Minnesota State and pitched one inning allowing four runs on eight hits but did not record a decision.
Mackenzie Ward (3-1) pitched the final six innings allowing only one run but took the loss. Mikaela Cox (2-2) started for the Lions but did not register a decision either as a reliever picked up the win.
The Lions strung together eight hits in the opening inning, scoring four runs. In the bottom of the second inning, the Mavericks started to dig back when
Hannah McCarville drilled a single through the right side which brought home
Emma Schifferle and
Madi Newman. Later in the inning, Sydney Nielsen hit a sharp grounder to second which brought home
Courtney Potter.
After two scoreless innings,
Potter tied the game up at 4-4 with a homerun to left field. The winning run would come from the Lions in the top of the seventh inning after a single to left field brought home a runner from second base. After the Mavericks got a runner in scoring position with one out, back to back flyouts to resulted in Missouri Southern State earning the 5-4 win.
Minnesota State will return to action tomorrow afternoon when it will face off with Northwest Missouri State and Emporia State. The first game is scheduled to begin at noon with the matchup against the Hornets scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
